Many people run newer versions of BOINC and it processes WCG just fine and many people run versions other than those tested by WCG, have many problems and create many support requests for the CAs; and many of these people end up going back to the WCG approved version. |

----------------------------------------So I should beware using 6.10.18 and World Community Grid. I was hoping to use my CPU for WCG and my GPU for another project but if there could be stability issues then I will try it but accept it has not been tested thoroughly. I don't want to make a wrong impression, but at least my PCs are crunching CPU tasks for WCG and GPU tasks for another project with BOINC 6.10.** without any issues for quite some time. So you can give it a try. But beware: IMHO, BOINC isn't the problem with GPU crunching. There is a good chance that the GPU gets grilled. So you should use a throttle for your GPU that allows not too much heat. ![]() Ask not what the world can do for you - ask what you can do for the world. |

Whilst for one the 6.10.18 client may be working to full satisfaction, for others it could be / is a dog, which is why we're now on 6.10.57 in development.
----------------------------------------Throttle for GPU... well the temps can be an issue for which TThrottle offers a solution on the Windows platform. Throttling the GPU in BOINC is controlled by throttling the CPU AFAIU, so that means loss for CPU only tasks too... not studied this in detail to give a definitive comment on this, but if so working, not thralled by that.

TThrottle controls the GPUs of BOINC projects independently from the CPUs. (I'm using it.)![]() Ask not what the world can do for you - ask what you can do for the world. |

[Throttling the GPU in BOINC is controlled by throttling the CPU AFAIU]
----------------------------------------Yes, TThrottle is superior in CPU/GPU% control over how BOINC does this , it being temp ceiling managed at that. Threadmaster GUI would be able to do the feat too, even smoother on a per-app basis, but it requires a bit more managing, adding apps to a table and setting the %. Still using it on my laptop with W7.

I have been using BOINC version 6.10.18 since shortly after I posted without any apparent problems for CPU tasks. My GPU is occupied by folding@home GPU client with no problems re: heat either.

People who like to use the most recent versions of the BOINC client might try 6.10.57 for Windows and Mac or 6.10.56 for Linux, available from Berkeley's download page.
----------------------------------------They seem to be rather stable and 6.10.57 is very close to what will be the next WCG recommended version for Windows. It is even possible to test a WCG custom version of 6.10.57 (with the special skin and the WCG install procedure) available from Berkeley's all-versions archive as wcg_boinc_6.10.57_windows_intelx86.exe I have it installed on three machines (XP SP3 and Win 7) and I have not noticed any problem. |

Don't know why there is no 6.10.57 for Linux on the /dl page, having no reason to think the 6.10.56 Linux version does not suffer the same elapsed time loss as the Windows version.
