With my USB stick happily crunching HCC, I started to look at why it's the only project that runs on it. I thought HCMD2 should be the project with the least requirements, and was to require the same amount of disk space as HCC. However, when I disable HCC I get the message that there is not enough memory for HCMD2, it needed some 400 Mbyte of free memory.
----------------------------------------So the question is why doesn't HCMD2 fit, while HCC does, on the 170MB free disk space of my USB stick? Dual core P8400 platform i686-pc-linux-gnu version 6.10.17 Regards, Martin ![]() |

48 reads so far and no response?????
----------------------------------------martin64, you found the right matrix and indeed it says there in the VM column 380MB. Add that to the physical ram use and you come to ballpark 400MB that WCG is demanding up front as your stick needing to have. Why up front... well not all jobs require the exact same and that is not known up front which is why the actual usage ranges are printed, with a margin for error... would not want jobs too often going into the "Exceeded memory use". No idea how you can disable swap file on Linux, but you could in BOINC Use at most 0.0% of page file (swap space) and set big enough RAM permission and , which with booting and crunching from USB stick would be 100%, either in use or idle. Let us know what your solution settings work out to be, but it should be doable without trouble.

Well normally you disable the usage of a swap file in /etc/fstab if you don't want to use it at all. Just temporary you should be able to disable it with swapoff and reenable it with swapon. swapoff -a should work to disable all swap partitions. I have not tried this myself as I'm not at home at the moment. You need to be root to do this or have sudo rights...
----------------------------------------But to be honest, I don't understand the relation between the problems and the usage of swap here. I don't think the stick contains a swap partition. But it is technically possible of course... |

you could in BOINC Use at most 0.0% of page file (swap space) Have done this, but it didn't change anything. Here is the server response: Message from server: Help Cure Muscular Dystrophy - Phase 2 needs 261.44MB more disk space. Some more data: Starting BOINC client version 6.10.17 for i686-pc-linux-gnu The server message doesn't talk about VM, it talks about 400MB required - confusing, at least. Regards, Martin ![]() |

Not sure if I remember it correctly, but with the command df you should be able to see you free disk space...

According the official System Req, the storage needs are 50Mb, same as HCC
----------------------------------------Help Cure Muscular Dystrophy - Phase 2 64 MB 50 MB Windows1, Mac2, Linux3 Help Conquer Cancer 250 MB 50 MB Windows1, Mac, Linux3 It is logically the disc space / VM which for this stick of 1Gb is awfully little to work with and the log saying there is 109.78 is simply not enough. Marc, <i>df</i> indeed gives the correct info. My VM is 82,870,880 blocks of 1k and 8% is in use, leaving 72,777,992 1k blocks.

It is logically the disc space / VM which for this stick of 1Gb is awfully little to work with Totally agree. But still, HCC is running Ok, all other projects need more space, as per server response. So here is the disk space requirements as per server response (which I got by setting the available disk space to a small enough value): Help Cure Muscular Dystrophy - Phase 2 needs 400.00 MB. Maybe that is what should go into the requirements table as disk requirements? Regards, Martin ![]() |

My suggestion is to fully disable swap file **. If disabling swap file you also free up space on the stick and may reduce stick writes too, presuming the VM runs off that resource. The df command tells the location, which is for me mounted drive /sda5.
----------------------------------------I've done it for a long time on a Vista box with 3Gb effective usable RAM until trying to run 4 DDDT2 A-Type... that did not fit. ** If so I'll note it in the matrix. It's rare for OSses not having the VM space available... it does say 109MB when I know HCMD2 needs up to 380MB.

Well a Live CD doesn't have a swap partition on it's filesystem, because it is readonly. Does a Live USB stick have one? I doubt, but I will try to build such a Live USB stick with the tools mentioned by martin64 in this thread.

Why not let martin64 do the df command and report on that before getting into these build efforts. Mind you a Live CD having one is kind of hard... this http://swiss.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=6424310 and this http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=90&t=46462&p=267741 suggesting there is/was something on with this.
