I upgraded my Linux to 64 bit while retaining my home directory. Now boinc complains:

Yes, you need to add that illustrious platform line <alt_platform>i686-pc-linux-gnu</alt_platform> without which a 6.10.17 64 bit client is / sometimes is not recognized correctly under Linux 10.04. See FAQ http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread_thread,28642 which is rapidly rising to the top hit list for Linux crunchers discovering the 64 bit speed advantage.

Thanks - this lets the box get new WU's. But they seem to be for the 32 bit client apps. Right now the wcg_hpf2_rosetta_6.17_i686-pc-linux-gnu is running. This confuses me. I thought the 64 bit client would perform much better. Could you shed some light on this?
Thanks. |

Yes also, the WCG apps are only compiled for 32 bit since doing them in 64 bit gives little additional gain. The science apps still use 64 bit OS features to speed up things. The HCC jobs run twice as fast in Lunix 64 bit as on Windows 7 64 bit. For the other WCG sciences it varies, but 10-15 percent is the observed improvement here, but others report bigger numbers.
----------------------------------------Since you're crunching, would you please edit your opening post and insert [RESOLVED] in the title as per my post. Happy crunching

Sekerob, have many thanks for bringing this all up again. I think this makes a real difference - just think about FAAH to be 15-30% quicker. For FAAH however I think you are wrong. I lay out why. I am on a regular 64bit Ubuntu machine
----------------------------------------# uname -a and the application executed is just a 32bit executable, statically linked. I don't see a way that the 64bit could be used (also knowing that there is not much SSE code in the the autodock sources). Though I also have seen the autodock source code to work with doubles (64bit) not with floats (32bit). /var/lib/boinc-client/projects/www.worldcommunitygrid.org# file wcg_faah_autodock_6.07_i686-pc-linux-gnu The wcg_faah_autodock applications are the ones that are started by the boinc application. There is nothing else coming below /var/lib/boinc-client/projects/www.worldcommunitygrid.org# top | head -10 | tail -1 cross-checking with top and ps aux as shown above, it is really the binary that is executed. If the WCG is indeed hiding the 64bit functionality in something that is 32bit, then please pass a pointer to how they are doing it. I don't see why they should not just offer different binaries in the first place, though, just like the rest of boinc I understand it to be doing it. With most of the work done in the 32bit application, not in the system, I also don't see how the OS underneath could be of any help.Your referal of HCC jobs on Linux 64bit being twice as fast as on Windows 7 64 bts I find difficult to believe, you meant Windows 32bit, probably, or something else is different. Could you please find a comment from the individual who is preparing the scientific application for FAAH? Have many thanks, with best regards Steffen [Edit 1 times, last edit by TKH at May 20, 2010 12:35:29 PM] |

First, can you please break up the code lines in your post. I don't have a 25 inch, 2400 pixel wide display.
----------------------------------------Second, HCC runs 2x faster on Linux 64 bit than Windows 64 bit. Whether you do or don't believe is something for you to read up on. I tested this upon reports from other members and particularly another CA and I think the HCC scientist too observed this, so now I have my quad crunch with Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit with the gains I noted previously. How it's technically achieved I do not know... it does on my quadruple boot cruncher, Vista 32 bit, Windows 7, 64 bit, Ubuntu 2 flavours, 64 bit.

... HCC runs 2x faster on Linux 64 bit than Windows 64 bit. ... Yep, confirmed. Processor Pentium(R) Dual-Core CPU E5300 @ 2.60GHz, 2600 Mhz, 2 Core(s), 2 Logical Processor(s) Same computer with different OS installed, tasks running at 100%: Vista and Win7 x64 on average take 2 hours 14 minutes. Linux x64 on average takes about 1 hour 10 minutes. But I have noticed (non-scientific observation) that the exhaust air from the power supply tends to be hotter when Linux is running than Windows. Power supply is an Antec 450W SmartPower 2.0 and is more than enough juice for all the installed components. [Edit 1 times, last edit by codes at May 30, 2010 11:55:20 PM] |

Suppose, if the same amount of effective calculations are condensed into half the time, then it would not surprise me, have though not particularly noticed here. Just looked in GKrellM and it says 61C with 2 HCC and 2 Beta running. The fan is going at 1800rpm, a few (audible) spikes on the graph, similar what is experienced under W7.
