There is an interesting project:
http://kaggle.com/hivprogression Where everybody can contribute to researching of hiv and aids, and the winner(s) wins cash. It helps to be biologist or bioinformatics, but actually everyone can join and do the task. So, if you like puzzles, join it! On the other hand, it would be cool to make similar incentives for WCG projects, possibly estabilish small prize for the finding of the best docking result? This could draw more WCG users. Prices could be donated by users and/or partners of WCG. What do you think? |

Rembertw - you already said something :-) - interested?
What is your opinion about other project? How applicable approach like of the other project might be for Fight Aids @ Home and WCG? |

I can be long and wordy on this topic but I'll be short and to the point. Not going to happen here at WCG (period).

Long time ago I proposed to give (donate) money to WCG and they didn't accept even that. And you think they will accept giving money to you ????!!!!????

wojciech_czyz_care,
----------------------------------------Even if WCG were to engage which from previous posts by the admin WCG wont, it's technically near impossible and probably costing more than the prices. Near impossible because by the time the scientists have determined from the hundreds of thousands of tasks constituting an ensemble pinpointing at an interesting compound, all the link data to THAT result or results have gone off-line at WCG, meaning there is no life connection between cruncher and that magical task. Remember, WCG hosts... they have no way to know what is coming through. Then there's the dilemma, FAAH only? [you posted in this science support forum]. Would WCG want or allow to have internal science competition? Enjoy the discussion, but fear it's very much no fly zone.

wow only $500 for results. personally i am going to donate my time here and forgo the $500 to me its not enough money to research the project to determine if i would even have a chance to win it.
----------------------------------------i would rather just crunch on and hope some people who are not doing distributed computing get on board on projects like that and wish anyone playing them good luck. here we go as far as doing the work with WCG if there was a prize of some small monetary amount (less than the price to build a decent good crunching machine) i would say that i would prefer if WCG would re-donate it into improving there code or towards one of the many little improvements to the project the money could be spent on. if it was more than the price to build a decent cruncher computer i would again wish they would build it and put it online themselves. so basically if they wanted to give me a reward i ask they spend it themselves on improving the project. now if we find a cure for AIDS or any of the other projects i would really love if they included in some obscure reference even the fact that WCG along with (listing of all nicknames we use here) help to find the cure. my goal is the same any ways i want cures for every disease out there and to be honest every one we knock down one way or another is more research that can be devoted to the rest of them. Cure them all then worry about anyone getting a reward for neat results ![]() |

The idea is a good one but we are not equipped to handle cash incentives on an international scale for multiple researcch projects accros a long time span. The best thing to do is to crunch on the grid AND participate in the Bioinformatics Competition. |

I was really happy to read the comments in the thread. Great to hear there are people willing to help science and the community.
damir1978 - maybe invest your money in a nice crunching grid or making a small internet campaign for WCG? Great to hear that you really care. Sekerob - I put the thread in FAAH as the project it refers to is HIV/AIDS related. You are right, it would work for any project in WCG. nasher - I hope that your name will be put on the list, you have donated a lot of computing time to WCG. And sure you will much more. bbover3 - I do hope that at some point WCG could support it. There are mases of people who would join WCG, at 200 000 members it is just a tiny drop in the ocean of internet connected PCs. |

The idea is a good one ... Personally I think that the idea is a bad one. I was hoping for more answers so I could enjoy reading, but here are a couple of thoughts from my side. Let's say it is technically possible to find your winner, for arguements sake. - You have 1 winner, meaning there are tens of thousands of losers. How happy will they be? - If even just one of those losers wants to fight the outcome, being convinced that the reward was rigged in some way, then won't it cost more just to prove that the reward was correct that the total value of that reward? - If the winner lives in, let's say, P.R. China where it is very difficult to cash in a reward like that for your ordinary citizen, how will you make certain that the award arrives? - If the winner is not crunching anymore, how will WCG actually find that person? - If the winner decides to forgo his reward, should it then go to a second, third, forth place? If not, then who will prove it was not rigged? - Why USD and not EUR, GBP, RMB or whatever other currency? - Will IBM and WCG employees be eligible for this award? If not, what happens if one of them actually "finds the cure"? Looking forward for answers from all different sides. ![]() |
