Hi,
i am considering buying a new CPU and I was thinking what would be best for WCG crunching, an Athlon II X4 630 (2.8 GHz) or a Phenom II X2 555 (3.2 GHz)? Which of the two would generate more points? Thanks!! |

i am sure that will depend on what project(s) you are running.
----------------------------------------if you are going for Badges then the quad would give you a higher ranking by cpu days, but i dont know what one would give you higher points. not sure what would be best hopefully someone can help you. ![]() |

Hello gfos,
The slower quad-core (Athlon II X4 630 (2.8 GHz)) should turn out the most work if you run 4 applications at once. It is often a good idea to run a mix of different projects with different computational requirements to minimize bottlenecks. Lawrence |

Hi Lawrence,
Thanks for the advice. One question though, when you say a mix of different projects you mean from those provided by WCG right? Like HCQ, Fight Aids, HPF etc... If thats the case can you please explain (or direct me somewhere that explains) why participating in only one project can create a bottleneck. I am asking because I was thinking on sticking with the Help Conquer Cancer but if that's the case then I will continue with all of them. Thanks again. |

yes he means a mix of projects on WCG as far as i know...
----------------------------------------there have been times in the past that running 2 of the same job type on my one dual core slowed those down to a crawl but when i opened it up to more than 2 choices it sped right back up again ![]() |

Hi Lawrence, Different projects have different memory and disk requirements and place different demands on Virtual Memory. Running 4 or 8 WU of one project that uses a lot of memory can reduce WCG performance. Thanks for the advice. Since I do not have a quad-core, I can not give you any advice from my personal experience. But I have read a number of posts in which people got better results by running several different types of WCG projects. I do not know the specs for their CPUs. It might have been cache shortage or main memory shortage or some other bottle neck. Lawrence |

The speed difference with those two processors is small and otherwise they are quite identical. So go for the quad as 2,9GHz x 4 is more that 3,2GHz x 2

Yup, go with the quad.
