Please do not abort WU. It is extra load for WCG servers and you delay project finish Maybe a CA can weigh In and confirm/deny your opinion. The benefits of giving up a WU so that someone else can finish a badge is far greater than the cost of having the server send another copy. |

I have 8 days of work in my caches and I will still be short of two years by 25 days. The only way to reach the two year mark is to wait for new work to be submitted. In the case of HFCC, I do not see any reason to abort any WUs unless you need to use the computers for another reason and do not see any reason to let the WUs for HFCC complete. I think, for the HFCC project, you should complete all the work you have downloaded to complete the current work submitted.

CA weighing in [will not debate]: The amount of HFCC excess cached work intended for abort by those who've reached their target is near negligible on the total volume of work units at WCG... today an estimated 650,000 (~270,000 of those for HCC science, these tasks lasting barely 2.5 hours). For those who've possibly over-cached it's in fact better as the resends upon abort will return within 2 days [reliable hosts]where else the No Reply will only go out after the first 10 days have passed and thus would otherwise have a cycle of ~12 days, worst 14+ days.
----------------------------------------HFCC resends and batch completion is a fully automated process, thus my opine is that volunteers should crunch what they want to crunch... it does not take long to return a client into the Reliability Rating group if that is so desired... long before the A-types launch again if that were a consideration :D

The benefits of giving up a WU so that someone else can finish a badge is far greater than the cost of having the server send another copy. I agree with astrolab... I'd like to give others the chance to get a better badge as well Perhaps there will be a bit more workload due to this sort of action, BUT since this project is nearly at its end, badge hunters might have set their engines to HFCC only and might be running idle due to missing work. Aborting the last units remaining in my cache (deadline May 30th) will probably speed up the end of the project since I expect the feeder to send the wu's to engines running idle which would crunch them right away. ![]() Edit: Added text: (Still from my point of view that I'm not sure the new units which will come out in a couple of months are being credited with phase one) [Edit 1 times, last edit by SHOPXXL-COM at May 24, 2010 6:16:41 PM] |

Still from my point of view that I'm not sure the new units which will come out in a couple of months are being credited with phase one Wouldn't that be a bummer if you aborted a few WU, came up short on your next badge then find out the new WU are posted as Phase 2. |

To quote from Project Information HFCC forum thread:
----------------------------------------Re: Project information At this point, the new targets will be apart of the same phase. Since the new targets are being screened using the same process as the first 3 targets. Sek, the calculation time needed to calculate these next targets highly depends on the size of the target as well. If it is a complicated one, then more splits will be required to do one work unit. But I would estimate that the project will continue through the end of the year. -Uplinger -Uplinger [May 19, 2010 1:11:40 PM]

@ sek, yes, I read that one
But still I remember about 2 new targets only that would last until the end of this year. I wonder what would happen if sci-people decide to go for... let's say... 5 targets instead of 2 targets? Let's say... they get new work until end of 2011 instead of 2010. EVEN if processed the same way... would we still remain phase one? Well, I wouldn't make a bet on that... so therefore... (and yes, I invested in new hardware BEFORE the news was out of the new targets so I could allow to stay with my aim of getting blue before of end of May) There we see the effect of badges... got buy me new WCG-dedicated hardware and exploding my energy bill Donation-donation... |

Hopefully these last two targets will still be part of phase one. From what Uplinger has said I see no reason they would not be as doing the same process for 2 of the initial 5 targets if I understand correctly.
Also Serkerob thanks as always for the information. Chou! |

The expectation of the original set was until sometime 2011... kind of a forced restriction, time, to select say the top 3. With the proven power/speedup expanding the scope within that same original time frame and it being the very same science application make it to me even prohibitive to not put this inside the same production stream. WCG does not create production strings and badges for the sake of adding another without a justification. There's none that I can see for those doing the hosting. PS: WCG and scientists are of course much appreciative if you were to put your new investment behind crunching towards the much hypothesized 10 year Palladium and a 25 year Black Pearl [or whatever precious stone or metal these would get assigned, if ever additional levels materialize]

Not sure what's there to remember when uplinger writes his estimate is till EOY Of course, estimates are just estimates only... no-one can say what happens if intel/amd bring out a "96-core CPU" in a couple of years. I remember about the inital planned end sometime in 2011 (I remember June'11) for this project but I would add that every new large scale CPU out on the market affects these EOP's, especially with this effect being leveraged by the increasing amount of crunchers. Also, these EOP's also depends on how many other projects are active at the same time. Regarding this project, I'm not being affected anymore if further targets stay phase one or not (End Of Year or not), and as I have some more badges to grab, I've switched... other scientists will be happy if they get their work done as well. Let's do the work! My devices now on HCC. I've got a blue badge waiting for me. And not to forget the DDDT2 as well... once launched bigscale ![]() |
