Euro 899+IVA till April 28 at a custom builder shop owned by one Micheal D.: I7-870 3.2Ghz, 8GB DDDR3, dual channel 1333mhz 2TB RAID disk. It's tempting, then put Linux 64 bit on, to double the time and get more work done at that... but first the ol Q6600 needs to earn back it's keep.

Re: Intel Core7 CPU

I cannot tell you exact speeds, but I can tell you that my i7-920 on Win7 64bit with 6 gigs DDR3 is blowing away WU after WU. I need to keep Additional work at 2.0 to not run out of work. I am running HT, so eight threads.

My friend just bought a new machine with an i7 with 6 cores, just for crunching.

As the saying goes "Just Do It".

Re: Intel Core7 CPU

My AMD X2 240 slightly overclocked is doing 1.15.

No need for anything fancy, just 64 bit Linux.

AMD has a couple of new 6 Core processors coming out that look to be around the speed of the I7 920.
You may want to look at those.

Re: Intel Core7 CPU

The only stats that I have to show are related of a test machine with disctinct processor than your mentioned:

Running Windows Vista Ultimate 32 Bits
processor Intel Quad Extreme QX9770 clock 3.2 GHz
RAM 4 GB
BOINC agent release 6.2.28
Configured to use 100% of processors and CPU time
Configured to use 100% of page file (swap space)
4 HCC tasks running at sametime.

The average time of this machine before the improvement on science software (last release available for HCC) ever was around 3.2 horus per work unit processed of HCC. Sometimes a little bit less or more.

Now, the average time was speed up a lot, with results completed in a range between 1.72-1.86 hours (range got after 42 WU's finished).

Good luck ! good luck peace coffee

Re: Intel Core7 CPU

bit new to this (used to do seti/united devices/folding years ago) so not sure what a work unit consists of, but i've done a few conquer cancer *results* in the last day or so, most of which are awaiting validation.

my core i5 750 overclocked to 3.2ghz is taking about 50 minutes per result (boinc 6.10.36, 64-bit fedora, 100% of 4 cores, 75% of 8gb ram)

my e5300 seems to be taking more like 1.5 hours per result (boinc 6.4.5, 64-bit ubuntu, 100% of 2 cores, 75% of 4gb ram)

the i5 seems to be doing pretty well compared to your i7's, which is odd - although HT will slow raw crunching down even though it can do more at once i guess.

i tried the gpugrid stuff but it was making my desktop unusable (it doesn't listen when you tell it not to run when you're working!) and making the nvidia gpu pretty hot.

Re: Intel Core7 CPU

Welcome here sej7278 !
From your runtimes I presume you are talking of HCC** WUs (what BOINC calls results, even before any result has been actually produced smile ).
At WCG we have several sciences with very different average durations, so when you want to discuss runtimes you better say for which science (or application) you are talking.

For info the runtimes for your i5 are consistent with my average for HCC on a Q6600 overclocked at 3.16 GHz.

Since other members have measured the throughput of i7 with HT at about 15 % more work done it is normal that their runtimes are about 85 % longer than yours or mine.

Edit: ** Sorry, you said it but I had missed it at first read. smile
