"Antivirus and Firewall BOINC Excemptions" Thread

Please for those who've been doing the exemptions for BOINC on their antivirus, firewall or integrated suite, maybe even Windows Defender would you please post yours for your favored security software. E.g.

Avast 5.0 on W7, both 32 and 64 bit

Settings, right hand top in GUI: Exclusions > C:\ProgramData\BOINC\*.* zone, hit Add button

Exclude Data_dir scan: File System Shield tab > Expert Settings > Exclusions > RWX all ticked for the C:\ProgramData\BOINC\*.* zone, then hit Add button.

Totally Optional for upload/download: Webshield > URL's to exclude > http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/ (if you trust WCG)

Anything else left default.

This would get collated into a future FAQ. Larder with screenshots if you wish. Do explain why there are exclusions if you have more than the usual... i.e. I have no firewall other than the one in router and W7 that has a rule to permit BOINC to use port 31416, 80 and 443 and ip 127.0.0.1 and the WCG IPs, and those of any other project I'm crunching for occasionally... this way BOINC never will be exchanging info with unknown destinations.

Mind you, if this comes from a first post by a brand new member without contributions to the name... I'll reserve the right to ignore ;P

edit: There is a help item on ZL and Norton/Symantec but am not informed what version, general or specific this applies to: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/help/viewSearch.do?searchString=zone

Re: "Antivirus and Firewall BOINC Excemptions" Thread

I use Comodo with the Defense+ -Service. If anyone encounters all work units of a specific application returning errors, have a look at the Defense+ log, if there are entries saying that wcg apps had been blocked. If so, check Defense+ > Common Tasks > My Own Safe Files if the application is listed here. If not, add it. Keep in mind that a different version of an application already set as safe needs to be added again, e.g. dddt2 6.12 and dddt2 6.17. Should be about the same thing with other security systems.

Norton Internet Security 2010

These settings seem to have fixed problems I had with beta WUs (i.e no more WUs being rejected with 'suspicious activity' mesages)

From Main Screen:

Computer | Settings | Exclusions | Scan Exclusions |

In the window that opens, 'Add' C:\ProgramData\BOINC and enable 'Include subfolders'

Do this in both the 'Scan Exclusions' and 'Real Time Protection Excluions' sections.

I also have SONAR Advanced Mode switched OFF because this is the element that Nortons had the greatest problems with beta WUs.

Great initiative, Sekerob! I hope my addition is useful.
