Re: Member Hijacking? [RESOLVED]

To join a team you do not need a password. If you founded Dacom Systems and were the Captain, then left, anyone can assume the Captaincy and change the team name without needing a password....

Thanks Scribe, that's cleared up the situation. I didn't know that. Thought it was the same as other boinc projects. There the founder(Captain) keeps the team unless one authorises a changeover, which I will not do.

Thanks again.

Re: Member Hijacking? [RESOLVED]

There are certain types who constantly try and find 'headless' teams to take over and use for their own purposes...... wink

Re: Member Hijacking? [RESOLVED]

In all this story passwords are not involved at all.
I don't know how teams are managed in a "pure BOINC" site, but this is how it works at WCG:
1. When a team has no captain, when a member of the team displays the stats page of the team there is an extra button to become the new captain.
2. When the captain of a team leaves that team he is abandoning captainship of the team at the same time.

When assiria wanted to take control of your former team he only had to-
1. display the stats page of your "Dacom Systems" team
2. click the "Join this team" button
3. click the "Become the captain" button which was added since there was no captain.

Once he was the captain he could change the name from "Dacom Systems" to "Assirians", the country from Canada to Brazil, and he could have changed other fields as well.
That's all.

Since the last incident reported (somebody had taken control and renamed a team with active members but no captain) a new feature has been added to the team stats page allowing the captain to immediately transfer this role to another member of the team without having a vacancy time between "leaving" and "becoming new captain". But in your case that would not have changed anything since you were the only member.

Wow, thanks Scribe & Jean. Info very much appreciated.

Also, thanks again Jean for returning team to me. Have rejoined & made myself Captain, so this won't happen again

It's taught me a lesson or 2....visit WCG more often & also crunch more often.

Re: Member Hijacking? [RESOLVED]

My apologies to all, specially Sirus for this mistake and inconvenient event. It is a test account used to make experiments.

Changed the team status hours ago and returned the data information to the original status as I found some time ago, when take it to make an experiments, once was abandoned, empty of members and without captain named. At that time I forgot returned the team data to the previous status found.

My sincere apologies to Sirius once never intended to steal anything. I named Sirius the captain, and left the team to avoid any additional inconvenience due my interference.

Re: Member Hijacking?(Resolved)

Not sure where to post this, but as it's a team enquiry.....

Just logged into "my grid" to see how i'm doing on WCG.

I noticed that I've been a member of Team Assirans from Brazil?????

This is not possible as I'm a member of team Canada

Any thoughts on how this happened?

You are not only one, same happen to me, also from Brazil.

I did create team (Ranarama) and left it when join to Minnesota Crunchers.
This creature (helperboitata) did join my aboned team, change name of it and definition.

Creature never returned any singe result, so only motivation of this creature was alternate team name and description.

Would you "assiria" please be so kind and share with us, what have you been practice?
You have not return any result, your total score is 0.

Re: Member Hijacking? [RESOLVED]

ultimaThule,
This case has been run in a rather civilised way, and it is closed now.

"Please be so kind" as to not try to start a fight here: the way you use "creature" is particularly pejorative, or at least despising.

There are several things regarding teams and captains that one cannot see or test without actually being a captain, and obviously accumulating points for a team is not part of them.

Regarding "left behind" teams, if one does not want that "his" team be joined and controlled by somebody else, a simple precaution is to create a dormant member and appoint it as the team captain.
Otherwise, if there are still active members in the team it is now possible for the captain to appoint one of these members as the new captain before leaving the team.

I shall ask the admins to lock this thread.

Thank you for understanding.
Jean.
