I have a Compaq Laptop XP Home running 6.10.18 BOINC and when running this sub-project locks up and will not respond and I am having to force a shutdown by holding the power button down.

You might try disabling any WCG screensavers. I have had similar problems and this is what was recommended to me. I have done this and it seems to help.

I think that version 6 BOINC and WCG screen savers are too uncertain. I don't know if the problem is device drivers or what . . . but I use 'blank' for my screen saver and avoid trouble.

I agree with disabling screensaver.
It cost you resources and it doesn`t save your screen at all. |

Well, I don't use them to save ny screen. Some have info about the WU and the fact I sometimes just like to watch them. I really don't see where not using them speeds this PC up. I notice it takes bout the same time with the ScreenSaver on as it des with it off!

I really don't see where not using them speeds this PC up. I notice it takes bout the same time with the ScreenSaver on as it des with it off! It's not easy to measure when used as a screensaver but if you start graphics via the Show Graphics function and leave it run for a while you will be able to use TaskManager to see how much CPU time it is actually using.I am not a screensaver user but from everything I have read here it seems that BOINC screensavers have long been a painful story. My personal advice is 1. if you need to lock your screen use a "blank" screen or a simple picture 2. if/when you want to see the graphics for a particular task use the Show Graphics function for the task and the time you need. Cheers. Jean. |
