I usually vacuum my case from the inside maybe twice a year. For an cleaning inspiration, here's what my noble warhorse looks like after a few months of battles in the World Community Grid Taking the rig outside and using "clean" compressed air will do a far better job than vacuuming. Vacuuming is just not powerful enough to dislodge dust in cooling fins and other small places. Also as I have experienced you may have to physically wipe the blades of a fan to get best performance out of them. |

Saw this thread and it made me realize that one box the fan was always running full blast.
----------------------------------------Took both boxes outside this morning and vaccummed; then reversed the Shop Vac and blew out an *amazing* amont of dust and dustbunnies! Not sure if counts as "clean" air but definitely made a difference After a couple hours crunching, the fan's barely ticking over on that one box, CoreTemp says 40C. Wish I had gotten CoreTemp and seen the before temps !![]() |

Hurray, 1 down, many more to convince it's worth looking under the hood, desktops usually but 2 or 3 screws away to showing the innards. The quad here has a simple slide to release the hinged sidewall.
----------------------------------------(Was looking for a picture of an old ~1960's sled vacumer by Excelcior or Husqvarna, but those turbo engine vacs were great at putting the hose on the back and have is blow rather than...[sensored myself] vac.)

I recently came across these photos from last year of a working computer, until the video card gave out for self explanatory reasons. This was how I found the inside of the computer, and a close up of the video card. I had to take the computer outside as I did not want to create an environmental hazard inside my dwelling.

This newest addition to Metro’s proven DataVac® line has been completely redesigned from the ground-up. It is much more compact and comfortable to use than previous models and features a new, almost unbelievably powerful 500-Watt motor that literally blasts dust, dirt and debris off expensive computer/electronic equipment to keep it running at peak efficiency. The new DataVac® Electric Duster® is positioned as a “greener”, more effective and cost-efficient alternative to the controversial “canned air” products currently dominating the category.

Again, took apart my mac book and used a q-tip to clean the blades on the CPU fan.
Running both cores at 100% it dropped my temp from 172F to 151F!!! ![]() |
