NOAA (The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) has released an animated video showing the tsunami originating off the coast of Japan, and then spreading across the Pacific. Dramatic, to say the least.

NOAA Animation of Tsunami Propagation from Earthquake in Japan

Last year, NOAA also produced an animation that visualized the tremors from the big Chilean quake

This animated footage gives you a more global view of the Chilean earthquake in action. Seen from this vantage point, there’s a certain beauty to Mother Nature in action. Waves rippling across the Pacific, as if a stone were thrown into a calm pond. But, obviously, for those experiencing the earthquake on the ground, it’s a very different and tragic story. sad rose

J.P.--

Last night on the news, they talked about the possibility of the remnants of the tsunami hitting the Chilean coast. Are you aware of any waves or other signs that the tsunami reached Chile?

Re: Earthquake Thread / from where you live

Dear lp thanks fir asking

Chile evacuated hundreds of thousands from areas vulnerable to coastal flooding, and refused to let residents go home even when the tsunami clearly lost steam. With last year's 524 quake- and tsunami-related deaths weighing heavily on everyone's minds, govement insisted on "prudence."

You are right , we had Tsunami alert along all the coast from this long Country , 34 hrs of it

After they changed it into alarm

We were expecting the first wave in our Eastern Island away from the Continent , but thanks God nothing happend

Further North there were houses detroyed, but the worst was in our 8 th Region , were a Town of name Dichato , that was again hit by 5 to 6 meter height waves They lost again everything , bear in mind that the big one was just more than a year ago on Feb 27th

What a pity , is very sad indeed , where this humble people were finishing with their new houses , now all lost ...
This started at 3 am Local , no casualties

A video from last year in same place

Re: Earthquake Thread / from where you live

NHK World channel reports that not only did the island move several meters horizontally, some coastal areas have also sunk 70 centimetres and in places 1.2 meter. (2.1 - 3.6 feet) causing lower lying areas to remain covered by sea water until barriers are rebuild and new ones raised.

Re: Earthquake Thread / from where you live

It's astounding how many fairly significant aftershocks have been recorded:
http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqsww/Quakes/quakes_big.php

Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Japan.
Indeed. Japan suffered from over 200 earthquakes of 5.0 or worse between the 11th and 12th March, 29 of which were over 6.0. Fortunately the warning of another tsunami today was a false alert, and the number of quakes has dropped in the last couple of days.

A picture giving a new meaning to the term ''boathouse'', an indication of the spec to which the 'house' part was build to withstand the tremors and tsunami. At the far left, a house on a house, eslwhere a picture of a little miracle ... a man being picked up 16 km off the coast, standing on the floating remnants of a roof.

WCG stats for Japan show a clear decrease. It can give an idea of the affected population.

Some impressive images here
