Re: Earthquake Thread / from where you live

The estimated 8.8 has been upped to 9.0. While many buildings survived the quake, costal regions did not, and the tsunami warning was only 10min due to the epicentre's proximity. Another realy bad quake and a sad day for the people of Japan. good luck

Shocked to see how bad it was, it will take a long time for them to get over this.

You may find this site of interest.

Re: Earthquake Thread / from where you live

There was an explosion at one of the nuclear plants.

I read that during full moons & new moons there is a small increase in earthquake activity, on average a bit less than 1%. However this increases when the moon is closer to Earth. We are approaching such a time; on 19th March the moon will be the closest in 18years (221567 Miles). Such ‘supermoons’ further increase systemic activity, especially in subduction zones such as the Pacific Northwest. The recent increase in solar activity might also be a contributor.

4m waves were reported in Russia’s Kuril Archipelago. An evacuation zone is still in place. They are worried about radiation levels and that the continuous seismic activity might trigger a volcanic eruption in the region.

Re: Earthquake Thread / from where you live

Sky Sat here has patched through the NHK World Japanese Newsline (English, channel 506). On there they said that 4 Earthquake monitoring stations over a coastal stretch of several hundred kilometres had synchronously shifted 4 meters on GPS. Tsunami activity is still observed in frequencies of 40 minutes... the Ocean slogging back and forth.

A Chiba medical team has arrived at the disaster area.

Japan uses a different earthquake scale than Richter, having a range 1-7, the Sendai quake NHK said it was a 7.

edit: scale is 1-7

Re: Earthquake Thread / from where you live

It's astounding how many fairly significant aftershocks have been recorded:

Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Japan.
