sad Re: Earthquake Thread / from where you live

I am just like Jean Pierre a Chilean, and I am so sad about this terrible devastating 8.8 earthquake..
It was the last weekend of summer and everyone was at the beach, the epicenter was in front of the lovely town of Curanipe
well known spot for surfing, so many surfers were camping on the beach, and many are missing..
My daughter was sleeping in the seventh floor in her apartment, she is a California girl, used to tremors, but in her own words,
"she NEVER in her life was so terrified"
thank God she as the rest of my family are safe.
Here is a link that shows the earthquake and aftershocks that the poor Chileans have to live day to day...

Dear Jean Pierre,

I am so sorry to hear about your friends, I know the feeling, we have some friends, young surfers who are missing, and suspected to have been drowned in the tidal wave that hit following the 8.8
Keep the hope,
it was nice hearing your voice today and I am glad you are safe!
A big hug,
Pachi

Jean Pierre, I pray to God that you will find your friends alive.
So glad that you are ok at least.

Re: Earthquake Thread / from where you live

Preliminary calculations by NASA following the giant quake in Chile conclude that as result the Earths axis shifted 8 centimeters (a bit over 3 inches) and the rotation due mass shifts, energy / reaction causing our planet to speed up it's daily rotation by 1.28 micro seconds. The Asian quake of 2005 made the earth to spin faster by 6.8 ms.

Sitting here on a peninsular ridge, squeezed between Africa and Europe, there's renewed greater attendance, but many historical buildings of traditional construction would not stand if their region gets hit. 10 months after L'Aquila many not so well off are still live in portacabins and tents... just 60 clicks north of here.

JP will understand some what's being said... hope he found his friends, though many many more are lost.

Re: Earthquake Thread / from where you live

It seems that in many places things are getting out of control, there are many scenes of looting, as people get desperate for lack of food etc.. Violence is increasing (a mall was set on fire by looters) and even if the loss of life is limited the devastation is huge.
My prayers and thoughts go to the WCG members, their relatives and friends living in Chile in these very difficult times.
