Re: Earthquake Thread / from where you live

JP, good to hear you are okay. It is hard for me to imagine an 8.8 quake. After seeing what a 7.0 did to Port-au-Prince in Haiti, I could only imagine the worst. We're hearing varying descriptions here of how much more powerful this one was. According to this page at the USGS website, a 9.0 quake has 31 times more energy than an 8.0 which has 31 times more than a 7.0. That means the quake there had almost 961 (31 times 31) times more energy that the Haiti quake. I understand buildings were evacuated in Buenos Aires, Argentina. That's about 1500 KM (900 miles) east of Santiago and on the other side of the continent. It is amazing to see those BBC pictures of the damage and see so many buildings still standing.

Re: Earthquake Thread / from where you live

Just to mention that saw now in the TV news that the huge EQ waves was felt by many people in many places of Brazil (mainly people living in buildings at high floors).

And we are thousand kilometers from the epicenter of this monster ! shock

Hope that Chilean authorities could help asap and in a good way all citizens reached. good luck

I felt sadness when the news here announced moments ago, that the victims numbers are increasing... sad

Many international groups / countries manifested jump to Chile asap to help and manages the disaster areas. applause

good luck coffee

JP -- I am glad to hear that you are okay and, at the same time, saddened by the death and destruction your country has to endure with this tragedy.

Re: Earthquake Thread / from where you live

Hi Jean Pierre, I'm glad to hear you're still ok! When will the world come to peace? Lately, it's one disaster after another. I'll hope it will calm down verry soon in Chille. My thoughts are with you (and all other people in Chille).
