A good dual socket 1366 board runs from a low of $350.00 to over $500.00 Then you need ECC memory which is more expensive but again worth the cost. Ok, no problem say $500 for that, plus a couple hundred for each I7 920 Last is PSU's.. Power supply unit? In my alienware I have either 750 or 1000 watt, my little quad though 350 if memory serves me So I take my quad 6600 in, tell em I want new moboard, 2 CPU's, triple channel DDR3 1333 RAM, and a new power supply. 500- moboard 250- I7 920s RAM-300? PSU 100? ok, maybe 1400-1500 Still cheaper than the alienware... And should I consider waiting for the gulftown to come out to put downard pressure on the 920? or maybe the higher end I7s to come down? Oh...cooling, better get some... Crap Win7 64bit version... ok pushing 2 grand now... Hmmmm... So I'm wondering how much a barebones gulftown would be... sigh ![]() |

You can of course go with the faster westmere's when they come out but lots of $$$ to do so. Top X5680's will be $3200-3400/pair ![]() |

Well,
----------------------------------------After all this debating back and forth... Going to get WIN 7 home premium (64bit) that should speed up the quad core, and in honor of Dengue 2, 6 more gigs of RAM because while running Call of Duty MW2, I got a low memory warning from windows. And I'm not about to stop crunching! ![]() |

Well Supposedly the gulftown 6 core is coming out March 16th. The 3.33 ghz extreme version for $999 US. If I did the math right that should be 87.5% faster than my I7 920 at 2.66 ghz... Apparently they aren't putting the slower ones out yet, good marketing strategy, bad for me wanting one NOW. I'm about to look up that chip movieman suggested see how that would do...

Excellent Jack007. I will be for about ten days in the Maldives to celebrate 25 year of marriage (silver wedding). And when I come back it will be the 15th March just in time for this major Intel event.
----------------------------------------I will suggest to my wife a Gulftown 6 core as a gift ![]() ![]() |

Hey I just installed windows7, and had to reinstall BOINC of course, how do I give this device a profile...
----------------------------------------Got it THANKS :) Ok, better question... I've tried looking it up places, but I'm search engine challenged. I have a Q6600 4 gigs of RAM and now WIN 7 64 bit Ok, so what good did I do by upgrading to WIN7, 1) I get to use all 4 GIGS of RAM not just 3.2 or whatever was the limit on 32 bit versions. 2) I get 64 bit, but in my wanderings on the web I don't see what that really means, I think it's some kinda pathway, and it now has 64 of them not 32, but pathway from what to where? AND does this mean any real increase in WCG processing??? or did i just waste my 119 bucks. (WIN 7 Home Premium 64 bit OEM) ![]() [Edit 2 times, last edit by Jack007 at Feb 26, 2010 3:05:59 AM] |

No answers to 32 v 64 bit...
----------------------------------------well I have a bit of an answer My old Q6600 scores with32 bit varied around 110 118, 105 etc my new scores (these are the credit claimed) are all 133. the 1.8 ghz laptop claims 75, the I7 920 claims 133 to 143 (HT on) so there was some bene to going 64 bit, was it worth $119 Canadian? SURE ![]() |

In short, most/all processors available nowadays are 64-bit processors which means that they can work/move 64 bits of data at once instead of 32 in the past.
----------------------------------------With a 32-bit operating system the specific 64-bit functionality of the processor cannot be used, therefore it is less efficient than with a 64-bit operating system which allows using all 64-bit bells and whistles which make a real difference even when processing 32-bit applications like WCG's ones. When going deeper into the specifics of each processor it is certainly less simplistic than this quick explanation, but I hope you got the general picture. |
