BOINC: Removing Devices from the Select Computer Drop Down List

Warning: This is for experienced users only who know their way around an operating system's inner workings!

For those that operate multiple clients on a network, over time adding/removing devices, reinstalling or reorganizing the network, renaming hosts, mistyping IP addresses or host names, the drop down list in Select Computer gets longer, never shorter, fully uninstalling BOINC not helping. Next time you newly install the client they're all there again. Until the BOINC uninstaller cleans up house after itself, the only way to get rid of the old computers in the list is to perform some operations with elevated rights on your system(s). Do the following:
  • For Windows, open with administrative rights the RegEdit system utility and find the key

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Space Sciences Laboratory, U.C. Berkeley\BOINC Manager\ComputerMRU

In the right-side windows frame delete the device names that are redundant.

  • For Linux, you can find the computers in the (hidden) file ~/".BOINC Manager", in the '[ComputerMRU]' section.
(where ~/ in the above is short for /home/<username>/

  • For Mac OS-X specifics are not known but if applicable the key is probably ComputerMRU too.

Don't do this if you feel shaky and make sure to create a backup and or restore point to recover when things have fallen apart!
