Hi all,
----------------------------------------I have 30 quad-core render machines spending idle time. So, I'd like to know if there is a way to manage these machines from a manager (Like a software which lists the clients). I mean, I have to start and stop the boinc client on all of then all the time. I know that there are some remote access tools like VNC, but I have to do this from one place and not access each machine and stop or start the client. If I had Linux running in these machines, I could start and stop by script and SSH, but they're running Windows XP 64 bit and I don't know how can I do that. Regards, Danilo Mussolini |

Greetings,
What you'll want to do is look into remote_gui_rpc. It allows the manager on one machine log into another with proper pass code that is set by you. I use this to manage my machines in the lab. You can configure it for all versions of BOINC. If you need help setting this up, please let us know. This will allow you to suspend the applications instead of stopping it completely via shell scripts. Let me know if you have more questions. -Uplinger |

Danilo,
toss has provided a good link with information about remote gui. Depending on how you install the agent, in the service start command on most of the systems you'll need to stop and add "--allow_remote_gui_rpc" to the options on the service. Also, you'll need to create a gui_rpc_auth.cfg file in the BOINC directory to help with controlling. This works on windows and linux...each has different methods for starting an application on machine boot. Let us know your setup a little more and we'll be able to get you some more tips :) -Uplinger |

Very nice!!
----------------------------------------Now I'm sure this the software I were looking for. I'm installing the clients as standalone and configuring the files "remote_hosts.cfg" and "gui_rpc_auth.cfg". Is it better if I install as a servide or not ? Well, I think I'll have the best grid performance in Brazil. I'm excited to see how much points I'll reach. It's so good help the people around the World. Thank you very much! ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by Mussolini at Jan 21, 2010 3:22:09 PM] |

I would recommend installing it as a service. That way the boinc client (which does the work of talking with the servers and starting the tasks) can be accessible even when the machine is not logged in. I don't believe you'll need remote_hosts.cfg unless you want to limit the connection to the machines from a select few known ip addresses.
Also, if you're in windows and install as a service, you'll need to go into services in the control panel to change the boinc client startup options to have the --allow_remote_gui_rpc in it as well. -Uplinger |

You only need to use --allow_remote_gui_rpc if you don't use remote_hosts.cfg Also, using --allow_remote_gui_rpc allows all computers to connect, even if you do have a remote_hosts.cfg Using only remote_hosts.cfg is the better choise, since this works without needing to manually edit the BOINC-service, and this is more secure because it's limited to only the hosts specified in the file. ![]() "I make so many mistakes. I still use the old boicview application.
http://www.boinc-wiki.info/BoincView_Installation_and_Set-Up_Guide I have it running on my ubuntu box running through wine. I only run it when I need it since boincview/wine really uses the processor when running. ![]() |
