Building a new computer: how can I best help WCG/BOINC?

Hi, I didn't see a forum for specifically this sort of question so I'm just posting here.

I am planning on building a desktop computer and I want a CPU/ motherboard/ RAM combination that will let me get the most out of BOINC while allowing me to stay on a sub-$1000 budget.

I've asked lots of people what CPU to get and most recommend the i7-920. Of course, the i7-920 means a 1366 motherboard and at least 6GB of RAM (for those of us who want 4GB or more).

I'm comparing this of course to a budget alternative, the i5-750 with 4GB of RAM.

For the i7-920, 6GB RAM, Gigabyte UD3R motherboard: $671.84
For the i5-750, 4GB RAM, Gigabyte UD3R motherboard: $468.97

This is for the same RAM (Mushkin DDR3 1600 latency 7). The $200 difference is pretty significant. Would the BOINC/WCG performance difference be significant?

I know the i7 920 has hyperthreading, triple channel memory and is more overclock friendly (whatever CPU I get, I'm going to overclock it). I just want to know if I pay $200 more for the extra 2 GB of RAM and the i7-920, will I really see that money translated into performance differences?

Most of the people I've talked with have answered coming from a gaming perspective - since I won't game, and I'm just going to run scientific applications and do office work, I thought I'd get a more informative response here. Thank you!

Just going by the CPU benchmarks listed by PassMark Software:

The i7-920 gets a score of 5451, the i5-750 gets 4207

Roughly 30% difference in processor power [also factoring in 2Gig more ram] for roughly 43% more cash. . . .

. . . it's a close call, but I'd go with the i7.

parisha, techie talk of a none-specific support, be it the WCG sciences or BOINC is conducted in the Chat Room where quite a few of these type of discussion threads exist.

Once or twice I asked for a Tech Room, but until then we'll do it there.

cheers

If you have already decided to spend up to 1000 the go with the i7. You will get much better BOINC performance that if you go with the i5.

I would also go definitely with the I7 and 1366 platform. peace
Price performance I agree that the I7 920 is probably the best. money eyes It has good overclocking possibility. Have good case ventilation (three large fans at least), and mount a good CPU cooler like the Asus Triton 88 (excellent), or the Arctic Cooling Freezer Extreme Rev. 2 (careful not to take the first version which is bad), but you have also other very good ones from Noctua etc... In this way you will be able to overclock and keep temperatures not too high. Aim for 70 C max per core and you will be safe. cool
The socket 1366 motherboards are more expensive but future compatibility with I9 is assured. This let you upgrade in two three years time when those CPU costs will have decreased.
There maybe lower cost versions of the I9 for the P55 platform coming but I am not sure about it. thinking
