I am in my computer room where I have two quad computers. I have central heat(forced air powered by natural gas) and I have set the thermostat to 55 degrees(located in another room). The temperature in this room is 73 degrees. The outside temperature is 30 degrees. So my computers are contributing 18 degrees to this room. I was surprised when I checked my last month's gas bill. It was only $30 for a 9 room house(4 bedrooms, bathroom, kitchen, dining room, living room, and exercise room). I just checked my stats and was surprised to find that I moved up 2 places in results returned(696 from 698). I am in page 14 and have moved back and forth from 698 to 702 in the last month. When I first made it to page 14 I was over 2,200 results below the one in 651st place. I am now about 2,100 below that so it will take between 150 to 200 days to make up the difference. I would not be surprised that when I get to over 50,000 results that I am still in page 14. I average about 50 results a day so 10,000 results will take 200 days.

My own electric bill is about $500.00US a month! I have a 4 bedroom Colonial Style home in Northern Virginia US. It is not designed to be heated and cooled efficiently so the heat generated by the pc's is mostly waste heat and offset by the open windows to cool their room back down. I currently have 16 pc's crunching for various projects. ![]() ![]() |

I agree that heating a room and the nearby environment with computers works very well. I use now my small basement room were my crunchers are to heat part of the basement by keeping the door opened. As the room is really small and the cases are very well ventilated, there is good communication with the outside volume and a good heat homogeneity in the room.
----------------------------------------The result is a very nice temperature in that small room (24 C, 75 F)as outside is at the moment at (-1 C, 23 F). If the door is kept closed with natural air conditioning (open the small window) then the air quality drops very quickly (room is really small) and after a few hours the air stays very cool, the cpu's are happy but breathing is not pleasant. ![]() |

I dont need to have the radiator on in my office as there are several systems crunching 24/7. Outside it has been no more than +1 deg C for about 2 weeks, and has dipped well below zero every night.
----------------------------------------I doubt the Ion is doing much for the living room though! Unfortunately Electric is a more costly way of heating than oil & gas. In the UK every 'Year Watt' (Watt used for a whole year) costs about £1.20. Typically electric items that are left plugged in use about 4W - about £5 per year. Count how many such items you have plugged in, and see what you waste each year. Phone & shaver chargers, toaster, kettle, cooker, microwave, DVD player, TV... Turn a computer and monitor off at their switch (rather than the wall socket) and leave the modem/router on and they are using about 20W electric. Some netbooks / light laptops use that when they are on! [Edit 1 times, last edit by skgiven at Jan 10, 2010 8:52:30 PM] |

If we just keep using electricity until something better comes along we will have less unemployment, right?! 8-))) ![]() ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by mikey159b at Jan 11, 2010 9:55:32 AM] |

If all those electrical and electronic engineers were not fixing pylons one or two of them might have the chance to come up with something better -
