In case anyone needs to know, right now, all of BOINC at Berkeley appears to be down. Not projects, other than SETI, just Berkeley.
----------------------------------------I needed to post to SETI boards, no go. So I tried to go to BOINC Message boards, no go. So I tried BOINC, no go. This has been now for several hours. I hope that this is very temporary. |

I just tried UC Berkeley and got the home page. I tried a couple departments and they were O.K.
----------------------------------------Then I tired SETI@home and also Space Science Labs. No go. So it is limited to Dave Anderson's area, but it is apparently all of Dave's area. |

BOINC has been down all day. It is not unusual on weekends. Everyone is gone for the Holidays ...its a College. It will be up on Monday when someone wanders in.

Jord posted about power upgrades being performed at Berkeley on the 27th, and stated SETI would be shutdown and it might affect the BOINC Dev board also. Looks like he was correct.

Thanks for the information. The problem is that on computers I have that are running SETI, I am getting errant notices that I am not connecting to BOINC, when all that is happening is that the computers cannot connect to SETI.
----------------------------------------Within the same minutes as the messages that I am not connecting to SETI, I got new WU's for other projects. So, it would be nice if there was a way to correct this confusion. I wanted to post this at BOINC Message Boards, but of course I could not get that done. |

Berkeley campus is having a major power upgrade, for which several buildings have to be without power. The SSL lab that houses Seti, Seti Beta and all the BOINC servers is one of them. This is the first in several such power upgrades, it will last for at least 24 hours.
----------------------------------------It started at 20h UTC, so don't expect them back before that time. As said, it's the first of several, so expect more power and server outages during the next weeks. This was advertised on the Seti front page.

Thanks for the information. The problem is that on computers I have that are running SETI, I am getting errant notices that I am not connecting to BOINC, when all that is happening is that the computers cannot connect to SETI. What is your exact error message? Is it a pop-up in BOINC Manager saying it cannot connect to the client, or that it is trying to communicate with the client? If yes on the latter, which BOINC version do you run? How much work do you have showing in the Tasks tab? If more than a lot (;)), it's most probably the problem with the RPCs not capable of updating all the tasks in queue. In BOINC 6.10 there's this new button that says "Show Active Tasks" (it'll change to Show All Tasks after being clicked). Try to press that one, and the problem should go away. Then only tasks that are active (Running, waiting to run and ready to report) will show. All others (Ready to start) will not, and their 'status' won't need to be updated, which is what is causing the problem. If you can't click on the Show Active Tasks button due to the pop-up being in the way, then exit BOINC, open regedit and edit HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Space Sciences Laboratory, U.C. Berkeley\BOINC Manager\Tasks\ActiveTasksOnly to 1 (one). Then restart BOINC Manager.

Ageless-
----------------------------------------The message that I got was that BOINC could not connect with the internet. It was a popup from the BOINC Manager. The message asked me to try a couple of things to reconnect with the internet, I cannot now remember what they were. I am running 6.10.18, 32bit on this computer. I had plenty of work, two WU's running, several waiting to run, and several waiting to start. I saw immediately that this was not a general problem for all projects, that it was totally SETI. I could see this in messages, because all other projects were able to "phone home", update, get new WU's etc., within the time frame that I watched. I just had no idea about the upgrade business at UC Berkeley or SSL or SETI involvement. I thought something was wrong and that I needed to find a place to report it. Of course, the BOINC message boards were down also, so I chose to come here. I am glad that there was no real problem and that others were able to address the thing properly. |
