I have in the past aborted some tasks simply because they seemed to be taking too long, thinking that they had become corrupted somehow. I don't want to abort any task simply because it's taking a long time. If it's simply a big task, I want to do it.
----------------------------------------Is there any useful rule of thumb that can be given here? I've had tasks that had total elapsed time + time remaining of, say 30 hours. Or 20 hours. Or 18. These just seem to be out of the normal range for any kind of WU. I'm running everything except Influenza. If this has been answered somewhere else where I should have looked, my apologies. How long did you let them run before you aborted them? I think the wu's have been working well recently. Seems like my longest taking wu's have been 7 hours rice units.

Also, what BOINC version are you using - as some of the later ones (I'm sure someone will specify which ones), use "wall clock" time instead of CPU time. Thus, if your computer is used for (say) gaming, then the "wall clock" will still be ticking on, but the actual WU may not be processing (i.e the CPU clock time has slowed/stopped whilst your computer is performing heavy duty processing elsewhere).

I'm running an Intel Core 2 Quad with 2 gigs of ram. I'm not a gamer. The vast majority of the units are running much more quickly, so I think it's something about the units themselves, whether it's a problem with their being corrupted or their simply being long (which would be perfectly okay with me), and not what I'm doing or what I'm running. I downloaded the BOINC in the last six months.
----------------------------------------Mikaok, I wouldn't regard a 7 hour unit for Rice or anything else as a problem. I'm talking about times that are much longer. I'm just trying to get a handle on what total length might signify a problem before I spend a bunch of CPU time on a unit. Thanks for answering, folks [Edit 2 times, last edit by Former Member at Dec 25, 2009 3:33:11 PM] |

mortsnorkle, unfortunately you still don't give us a huge amount to work on....
----------------------------------------You say that you downloaded BOINC in the last 6 months - from where?, the WCG website or from the Berkeley website?, which actual BOINC version are you running - 6.2.28? or a later one?, which projects are you running so as to see the long running WU's? Also, how long is "a long time"?, as my definition and yours could well be hugely different, and finally, are you seeing the percentage complete of the WU in question move? BTW, there IS a known issue with the HPF2 project, where, just occasionally a WU get's "stuck", and appears to be processing indefinitely. Unfortunately the techs haven't been able to pin-point exactly where the issue lies with this particular situation - although by simply pausing/suspending and then restarting the WU in question, seems to restart it from a clean point - resulting in a successfully completed WU. ![]() |

Please give us the name of the application(s), Elapsed Time and Progress %, from work units where the problem occurs?

I have had HFCC units run around 30 hours on a Intel Quad Q6600. Doesn't happen very often but some of those can get quite long. They have gone over 40 hours on 1.5 ghz P4. If they are showing progress I would not worry about them. The Rice jobs all run about 7 hours no matter how fast your system is. The CMD2 units will run between 6 and 12 hours for the most part except if you get one of the tail end units which will go quicker. HPF2 is the only one with a very occasional problem, others have reported them but I have not had any.
----------------------------------------Hope this helps Cheers

While I haven't had a WU run 30 hours, I have had HFCC units that ran 15-18 hours. I just had something probably similar happen to me yesterday on a HPF2 WU. Got up to find 14 hours complete with 18 hours to run, but percentage of the WU was NOT increasing. I suspended, but didn't abort, the WU and rebooted the Quad. This forced the WU to start at the last saved checkpoint and it ran perfectly fine after that. It validated when submitted.
----------------------------------------Might try that before you abort, but as stated above a lot more info is needed. I would not have done what I did if the percentage complete had been changing; tho I would have found it odd that an HPF2 was taking that long when they normal run no more than 5 maybe 6 hours normally on the Quad. Sgt. Joe and Lee Ann, it would appear from what you're saying that my experience is not at all atypical. I'm doing 2 hfccs right now that look like they're going to take about 14 and a half hours to execute.
----------------------------------------gb009761, I will keep your advice in mind about pausing and suspending. I appear to berunning BOINC 6.2.28 downloaded from WCG (this website). Thank-you all very much. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Dec 26, 2009 12:24:16 AM] |

That sounds about typical for hfcc, last 2 weeks I have gotten anywhere bteween 3 and 18 on my 2+ GHz machines and up to 72 on my slow box
----------------------------------------more info on your system, software, and project would help [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Dec 26, 2009 5:42:54 AM] |
