My internet connection is as of recently experiencing heavy timeout failing. This is specifically in regard to running facebook/fishville (java based programs) and WCG at the same time. This also happens when using facebook chat and trying to navigate pages.
----------------------------------------I know these programs use more of my available ram. I have WCG set to be nice and share the space (within reason) but here is the bottom line. I can't use those games without falling out of sync with the servers. I do not like java based websites to begin with but they are a fact of life. I just want to point out that there is a compatibility problem. (And note the perceivable slowdown from WCG programs is often a huge deterrent to potential WCG users.) Is this something that can even be fixed? Facebook should not fail to work while running wcg. I am willing to believe it is facebooks fault. But is there any way to check the efficiency of the boinc clients response (in giving back memory) Would a small dedicated freespace buffer reduce this incompatibility? (in other words i dont want to NOTICE the chops) Running wcg on an ubuntu machine makes using the operating system virtually impossible unless you turn off WCG completely. I run a dual core 2.6 4gb ram computer as my primary. I am building the belief that the program runs too efficiently and is greatly affecting my operational use. 1. BOINC nor the sciences use Java in any form or fashion.
----------------------------------------2. If WCG has an impact on playing games or any other program you could consider upgrading to the 6.10 client which has a cc_config.xml line that allows to stop BOINC automatically whenever a game is loaded. <options> See BFS FAQ: http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/index.php?language=1&view=91 on how to set this up. Note that if you forget to exit the game BOINC will remain to be suspended until you do.

THIS IS MY POINT:
world community grid behaves incompatibly with facebook. You need (or the OS needs) or FB needs to consider the relevancy of mutlitasking (which javascript often ignores). BOTTOM LINE: If facebook wont play ball, you lose all facebook users. (and FB is #1 SN site right now). You need to PLAN AROUND OUTSIDE FAILURE. (most specifically: any mac user will immediately quit trying and call apple.) repeat my experiment: and if FB wont compy with help requests pinpoint THEIR resistance. A user should NOT wonder why their computer sucks more for helping more. |

You're the first to observe that FaceBook+BOINC incompatibility, for it will affect all BOINC projects, causing system crawling, and I do understand you're on Linux. There is in fact a big initiative called Progress thru Processors of FB+GridRepublic+Intel in the Distributed Community, so I wonder what's special about your setup. Gaming we know can be impacted by BOINC, hence why the code lines were added some time ago to allow automatic BOINC pausing.
----------------------------------------So, if you want it to be researched, without resorting to all capitals typing sentences, provide us with full data, setup, browser version, javascript, security, distro, client version so developers can actually try and replicate what going on. Alternately you could report to the Berkeley forums: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/forum_thread.php?id=4154 for as said this would impact anyone running BOINC with Facebook.

The FB link which also continues on to the FB app for Progress thru Processors. I'd venture they've tested this. http://m.facebook.com/progressthruprocessors
----------------------------------------PS: WCG/BOINC is designed to use spare cycles, so by all means switch BOINC off if it impairs the regular use. Might try Firefox 3.6 or newer Opera as I think they've made great progress in having java speed up.

Shinobi Gaiden,
----------------------------------------Could you please provide me with a link to the game you are using to give me a chance to try it? I play games from the GooBox application when I need a break and I have never experienced such a trouble, either under Ubuntu 9.xx or under XP3... Except yesterday morning where the Elementz game was displaying very poorly under Ubuntu 9.10 and snoozing BOINC did improve things. Since this is so unusual (shoudl I write abnormal?) I decided to reboot Ubuntu and everything was fine again. I suspect some occasional problem with Ubuntu 9.10 that I have upgraded only on end of last week and which seems a little more fancy than Ubuntu used to be. Cheers. Jean.. Edit: Actually my problem could be more with the Flash plugin which refuses to work until I completely close/restart Firefox every now and then since I have upgraded. ![]() ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by JmBoullier at Dec 15, 2009 3:22:44 PM] |
