I've tested the latest WCG-branded and the latest stable BOINC client on Windows 7 x86 & x64.
----------------------------------------We have our labs crunching when they're idle for 10 mins, screensaver comes on after 11 mins, and power save (turn off LCD) in 20 mins. I've noticed that with Windows 7 and this combination the LCD never turns off. Anyone else seeing this issue? Is there a fix/workaround? We'd like to keep using the WCG screensaver, but we'd also like to save on energy bills by turning off the LCDs after 20 mins. Any help is appreciated. ![]() |

1. Yes, I've noticed through time that Windows sometimes forgets the energy savings for the screen and the LCD staying on. Resaving the settings corrects that. Recently noticed this behavior again on W7-32 laptop with BOINC 6.10.19. Think that it's not BOINC causing this though.
----------------------------------------2. Probably you're aware that the BOINC screensaver also has a blanking option. E.g. Have screensaver come on after 3 minutes (BOINC starting after 2 minutes) and blank after 15 and the screen going into sleepmode after 20. In latter, idle crunching only set up I'd recommend Leave Application in Memory for greatest crunching efficiency (RAM permitting).

Well it doesn't exhibit this behavior w/ default Windows screensavers. Resaving the setting doesn't correct it either. We have the WCG-branded BOINC agent installed on ~850 lab machines running Vista...they don't have this issue. Which is why I think this is Windows 7 + WCG screensaver.

Pass. Works here.
----------------------------------------1 minute to kick in screen saver (running RICE presently) 2 minutes to blank the ss 3 minutes to dim the display 5 minutes to switch the lcd off Mind you, I've had to hack the manufacturers screendrivers for Vista in as the W7 drivers would not give me anything over 1024 pixel width. The Desktop on W7-64 also works fine here. Nvidia 195 WHQL drivers. Vaguely I remember Marist or another college partner reporting this many months ago with XP or Vista???? Is this with or without password and is this a service, limited or all user install? I run all user.

Fail. Consistently on 3 completely different machines. All running 7 Pro, 2: x86, 1: x64. All different video cards. 2: WCG-branded agent, 1: BOINC 10.6.17 x64.
----------------------------------------With my timers: 1. Do work after idle 10 mins 2. WCG/BOINC screensaver after 11 mins 3. Turn off display after 20 mins The display never turns off. It keeps showing graphics indefinitely. If I change the screensaver to ANY built-in Windows screensaver, the display always turns off after 20 mins. We've never had this issue with any XP or Vista clients. ![]() |

Can you please open the BOINC Screensaver settings and have it blank after 5 minutes and see what happens.

I tried that and it didn't work either...nor should I have to change a setting that I never have in the past. The screen will go black (using full power), but it won't turn off.

I was trying to help you find a workaround on something not reported before by working through all the settings. I've even played with the websettings on frame refreshes and CPU% allowed. Maybe someone else has the problem too... rather vexing on all your 800+ devices.
----------------------------------------edit: I've opened a thread also at the developers forum in case one of the many testers comes across this. See http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/forum_thread.php?id=4592

Thanks for your suggestions Sekerob. I'm gonna try the latest BOINC test client and see if the results are any different.
----------------------------------------I did find that with shorter timers (screensave in 1, powersave in 3) it did work some of the time. With the longer timers it never does. Hopefully a dev can help. ![]() |

Did trying the latest BOINC client 6.10.18 or 6.10.24 work for you on this? http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download_all.php
Also, can you try checking to make sure the latest drivers are installed for your graphics card? I'm curious if the new version of windows doesn't like the openGL. Have you tried attaching to another project to test to see if it was just WCG screen saver? I doubt this is the case, but I would recommend connecting to and testing seti@home. -Uplinger |
