Sorry if this is in the wrong forum but something i was pondering over, it may have even been suggested before but here goes anyway ....
----------------------------------------With the huge number of Iphones and Ipod Touches sold, is it feasable for a BOINC app to be created to run distributed computing projects like WGC, or are they not powerful enough or the is power drain from the processing involved too great for the unit, render the idea useless. Your thoughts please :) ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Hello barney15c,
This has been discussed before. Yes, it is possible for some projects, but it would be a pathetically small contribution that would appear almost insignificant against the results returned by desktops and laptops. Yet we would really be draining a lot of batteries that people need for phone calls. Possible, but not reasonable. Lawrence |

Hello barney15c and lawrencehardin,
Its great that you put some important points in that discussion. I would start with very clear marketing advantage - mobile applications especially on iPhone have high potential to be shown by one person to other, bringing more awarness about World Community Grid and other similar projects to new people. By installing the software on mobile we may provoke that person would install it on his PC - the true gain!!! As to the battery operation - iphone (or mobile in general) application could work when the device is charging or being docked. Many people charge their devices entire night which might give enough time to cope with small tasks. So anybody to start making port? |

----------------------------------------And here's one where the plug that goes into the cell melted http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies-archive.cfm/1065728.html Several were discussing this at the Berkeley developers site http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/forum_thread.php?id=4346. Want to see more, go here http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/forum_search.php type in iPhone and set filter to 1 year. Someone already ported the client but... Can see to merely have a BOINC Manager / BOINCview / BOINCTasks application to check the devices remotely. Also, with RSS you might get your stats delivered to your phone, but crunching... start coding and buy a dozen to test it on.

Thank you,
Wow, it seems like some charger connectors had a poor contact and were overheating, this added to the heating of the battery when charging and heat of the device beeing used lead to those situations. Lets hope that Apple will improve new products quality, after all they should support being charged and having 100% of CPU at the same time :-) |
