Re: multiple errors

I just obtained 7 new WU's. 5 are HFCC, and 2 are rice. When the WU's began erroring out, preferences were set to rice only. I have changed it so, if it happens again, I can see if it is just a rice issue.

So far 2 rice WU's have been running for 18 minutes without issue.

Re: multiple errors

There's no issues of any significance with W7/Hardware combo/BOINC client. There will always be low percent of setups that have an issue, HPF2 & Rice seemingly most sensitive to these and in both these science cases causes the fold up to happen within minutes of startup. Here's a W7-64/Quad extract of what came through in between:

AFAIAC, 1 error on the first 60 results on this totally ground up install on a brand new OS with an still in development client is good enough for me. The 1 error I know why happened (a driver update that blew up while crunching)

Running a mix of projects is the best guarantee that WCG work will not fully dry up. The quota down/up for bad/good works is 1:2 i.e. if you turn in a erroneous result followed by a good result, your quota will be higher again. The quota incremental up path being 1 > 2 > 4 > 8 > 16 etc. That is if it got as bad as the daily quota having gone down to 1 per day.

Re: multiple errors

FYI, I currently have 7 devices running Boinc. I have also had it on other computers that are no longer in use. A few of those devices had issues with boinc when it went to screen saver, in that it would freeze and subsequently crash. It always resulted in a reboot. On all of those devices, I removed Boinc from the screen saver and just ran it in the back ground. Once boinc was removed as a screen saver, none of those machines had any further issues. Today, when I reinstalled Boinc, I made sure to unselect the screen saver option. So far, the two Rice WU's have crucnched to 20% with out issue. I have a feeling that this most recent issue also dealt with the screen saver. This laptop ran an older version of boinc with windows vista before. It was not one of my computers that previously had an issue with the screen saver. I recently did a clean install to windows 7, and the freeze happened 6 days later. Just something to maybe look at.

Re: multiple errors

That Start Here or Help FAQ's are never or rarely read is once again extensively confirmed. "So, apparently, it will now recognize a computer based only..." The implementation by WCG to try match a new device install/computer against the ones already known has been in place for over a year. It's not perfect [I know how to break this], but case in point here, it does work if nothing too drastic happens. smile

Well, I got a new "device", instead of re-using the old, when attached to WCG one week ago the 14.11.2009, so was assuming it was just another case of WCG running older server-code...

Old server-code isn't the case in this instance, since a quick look-up reveals it was added 18.01.2008, from Kevin Reed. cool

Re: multiple errors

I run the Rice project exclusively on one of my lesser systems (24/7) as it is less demanding in terms of time than some tasks, notably the Help Cure Muscular Dystrophy tasks, that times out after about 6 hours, if they are not finished! I also noticed that by running the Rice project tasks were completing in 7hours and for most other projects on the same system they ran for about 20h or more. When I worked out that the system did more work crunching on the rice project, due to the CPU's limitations effecting performance on the other projects, I configured that system to only run the Rice tasks.
