Hello!
----------------------------------------My team SETI.Germany organized the 5th Birthday Challenge with almost every team from Top30 BOINC combined. It's the most popular current challenge and it ends at 22.11. This challenge really increases WCGs output (BOINC credits): Just the Top3 teams of this challenge: L'AF - 250k average output - now: 340k SG - 90k average output - now: 320k S.USA - 63k average output - now: 250k Thus, challenges are an important feature for WCG and a lot of people in my team will crunch WCG in the future, because they acquired a taste for it. We want to make 3 proposals to improve challenges: 1. Update challenge statistics oftener (so it's more exciting for the participants) 2. challenge statistics on member level: teams consist of individuals and the members want to know, how much they contribute & on which rank they are. 3. only accept WUs, which are also downloaded within the challenge period (now, members can crunch WUs before the challenge and upload them within the challenge period). It falsifies the challenge scores. Best regards from Germany crille |

Hi crille,
----------------------------------------yes it does look like this one is becoming a resounding success and all the external forces added in are well and truly appreciated subsequent to spreading the good word. On your suggestions: 1/2 Think no one would object to see the same frequency of update for teams and individuals. Not sure though if that comes with a similar price as the nightly stats lock outs? Something for the website developers to consider v.v. performance impacts and other snags still lingering from yonder UD days. Mind you WCG recently upgraded the process so all stats do now, except for the nightly global and team updates, remain open all day. Might hint at future possibilities. 3. Problem with only downloaded results during the challenge ignoring transient up/download issues and other bottlenecks: Theoretically on a 7 day challenge and some buffering it would create a condition where 99% of the work can get validated within the challenge period, but not the very short ones and they do get run too. A major portion of the work just would not get validated in time. And, some teams can bring in the forces from outside. Many are not in that position, so does that conversely not distort the results for the locals? The world famous DPC has a house rule for their POTY challenges: No pre-buffering, scouts honor. At least make this a point to mention in the invitation document till a fair solution is found / is deemed needing implementation. ttyl and best from Italy. We increased output at WCG to 235 percent, also because WCG was appointed POTM for the second time this year ;O)

Hi Sekerob, the additional efforts to update 100 or 200 team stats during the noon update should be relatively low compared to the what else is being updated. It would be great if the website developers considered the suggestions of crille1006. Thanks and greetings! |

Not in the know if doing just the challenge participating teams is a workable option... certainly would be a motivator for some to be permanently enrolled in one or the other race :D

... certainly would be a motivator for some to be permanently enrolled in one or the other race :D Exactly! And my hope is that we can pull more crunchers from the teams that are working for other BOINC projects as well. The more attractive the WCG challenges are, the better our chance ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by roundup at Nov 23, 2009 1:58:57 PM] |
