Just a stupid question, but anyway :
Is there performance difference between a linux installation or windows installation ? I mean, will I see a difference between a linux or a windows installation in term of calculation speed ? |

Under the same BUS mode (32-bit or 64-bit) probably not much, although it is easier to quickly clobber a Windows installation with various more or less useful background tasks.
---------------------------------------- But if you have a 64-bit processor and a 32-bit installation of Windows, install a 64-bit Linux in dual boot mode and you will quickly see the difference for yourself. The difference will probably be about the same if you replace your 32-bit Windows with a 64-bit one, except that you can do the Linux move for no extra cost. Search this forum for various discussions on the same topic. Cheers. Jean. |

If you are going to use Ubuntu, go with 9.04 at this time. There seems to be some rather large bugs in 9.10.
I am using Ubuntu 9.04 with an AMD quad and the install and setup went without issue. Also, there seems to be about a 20-30% increase in performance with the 64 bit version. I don't have 64 bit winbloes so I can't attest to the performance difference in that situation. |

I have 2 OS on my machine - new Mandriva Linux 2010 and Windows 7. I've made benchmark test in BOINC and under windows machine scored about 1.5 times more points... Now using windows.
By the way, can you sugest me- I've reinstalled OSes on machine and now in my account old machine names exist together with unprocessed tasks. How to delete them??? |

By the way, can you sugest me- I've reinstalled OSes on machine and now in my account old machine names exist together with unprocessed tasks. How to delete them??? You cannot. Simply forget them. The tasks will be redistributed when they reach their deadlines. And the old devices will disappear from your lists after a few days. About comparing Windows and Linux 64 have you stopped immediately after seeing the benchmarks or have you run a few tasks to see if one is faster than the other. Benchmarks are not meaningful, unfortunately: from one version to another under the same system you can have very different benchmarks, particularly with the Linux versions. I cannot imagine one valid reason why it is so, but that's the way it is. Cheers. Jean. |
