Hi uplinger. Thanks for offering some help. I was offline for a while due to networking problems (maybe Karmic, maybe not?) but a change to OpenDNS has fixed it for now. I still don't have BOINC working though.
and
Sorry, I have been adding lots of other software and fixing the networking etc. The "Ubuntu Software Centre" does not offer the BOINC Client, only the Agent. IO have subsequently found that if I "disconnect" from the projects I'm not connected to, it opens the dialogue box for me to put in the WCG address, but it doesn't work. Any ideas please? |

Minor point of frustration. Not sure why, but the link as displayed (at least in my browser's view of the forums) shows "curl" as "...", which doesn't work properly. However, underlying the incorrect visible display, it seemed to have the proper link, as pasted here (mostly to see if it still displays with the ...).
http://boinc.berkeley.edu/trac/browser/trunk/.../ca-bundle.crt?format=raw From preview, it still displays the misleading ... in the browser. *sigh* Anyway, the other steps seemed to work properly, and it's running now on the other computer. (This link is on a computer that is also connected to Notes, which is not yet true of that target box.) Apart from that, I still don't understand what is really going on here. There already was a co-certificates.crt entry in the targeted place, but it was a symbolic link, and obviously wasn't working correctly. After the cp command, there is still a symbolic link in the /var/lib/boinc-client folder, but now it's working okay. |

Momist,
Can you take a screen shot of what you see and upload it somewhere? If you don't know where to upload a picture to on the website you can email it to support@worldcommunitygrid.org and just make sure you put attn:Uplinger for the subject. To take a screen shot in ubuntu, you'll go to Applications -> Accessories -> Take Screenshot. This program will ask you a few simple questions, might be best to take a picture of the entire desktop but have BOINC open before you try to take the screen shot. Also, the the software centre i believe should have both the boinc-client and boinc-manager listed. It looks as though the client installed properly with you being able to post messages. (FYI, the client is the part of the program that actually handles all the communications with the servers, starting and stopping the science applications and other tasks. the manager is just the human interface for it.) Try this in your terminal to see if everything is installed properly. sudo apt-get remove boinc-client boinc-manager sudo apt-get install boinc-client boinc-manager Once these two steps are done see if your gui looks proper. It may reset what is needed. Also, if you can't attach to World Community Grid via the command line if the GUI interface is not working for you. (I'm hoping we can figure out what is causing the GUI to not work for you) This may require two steps, first is to get your account key for world community grid if you do not know it. boinccmd --lookup_account http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org <username> <password> Next, take the Account key that is printed, should look like 88bf47981d4a <-- yours will be longer, as this was just an example. And then use it in the next command. boinccmd --project_attach http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org <account key> Let me know if any of this helps. Also if you want, please post the output you get from the command lines that I gave you. shanen, The shortened links are part of the new forum software. Please right click and copy the link location instead of highlighting the link text. This is the work around I use. Basically the what the copy command does is take the original file you have in the Downloads directory and overwrites what the symbolic link in the /var/lib/boinc-client folder is pointing to. It does not remove the link to put the file it's place. You can if you want, remove the symbolic link and then copy the crt provided in the link to that folder. I did not check to see what the diferences were in the ca-certificates.crt as I have not had trouble with changing this file to the one provided in the link. -Uplinger |

@Uplinger
Thanks for the help there, the un-install and re-install worked for me. Interestingly, I tried the command line un-install followed by running the shell script from the web site, with the same result as before. It opened a window _behind_ all my other open windows (i.e. not immediately visible) and when I tried to enter the information to attach to the project, nothing worked. After un-installing form the command line and the re-installing from the command line, everything worked as it should. It seems that the automated version has a bug. Once I logged in, it downloaded a couple of work units and also gave me the following messages: Thu 05 Nov 2009 21:46:50 GMT||A new version of BOINC (6.10.17) is available for your computer I'm now rather nervous about doing this - is it advisable please? |

Momist,
No reason to download the latest version from boinc.berkeley.edu if your version is working. The agent software is developed by this group. When you say the automated version has a bug, do you mean the one from our website? -Uplinger |

Yes Uplinger,
I'm no geek, but I've been running Ubuntu for a while now, and the download for Linux from the WCG website is the one that is not working for me, while the command line instructions you gave worked fine. Mine is a "clean install" of the Karmic Koala, 9.10, with a separate "home" partition that has so far survived several upgrades/installs. I used to dual boot with Warty/Win98. Of course, it may not be buggy, it could well be my install is a bit flaky or some unique condition on my (very old) home-brew machine that's causing the problem here. If no-one else is reporting failure from that link, let it go. Thanks for your help, and it's crunching away now. Momist |

Momist,
I have not tired it on my system from the command line as I prefer to use the deb's to install applications on the system. One thing that may be causing the problem is that Karmic Koala is planned to run on ext4 and you're old home directory is more than likely still ext3 file system. So I do not know if this is causing the issue as I have heard rumors of permission and access issues between the two file system types if you set up your / as ext4 and /home as ext3...but I have not tested that issue. I will test the website version on the next machine I install Karmic Koala on. To see if it is just a general issue with Karmic in general. Glad things are running for you again, -Uplinger |

I am new to Ubuntu and Linux but i have an another installation of Ubuntu running the BOINC with the grid. anyone? Please... Paul.e.n. |

http://linux.about.com/cs/linux101/g/metacity.htm : Definition: metacity: A lightweight GTK2 based Window Manager. Metacity is a small ((6K lines of code) window manager, using gtk2 to do everything. As HP says, metacity is a "Boring window manager for the adult in you. Many window managers are like Marshmallow Froot Loops; Metacity is like Cheerios."
???? I do not run Linux. Lawrence |

Here is an alarming report in The Register. One in five upgrading to Ubuntu 9.10 have problems. The article suggests waiting another month for bug fixes before upgrading. 3 Nov 2009 The Register 'Early adopters bloodied by Ubuntu's Karmic Koala' : http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/11/03/karmic_koala_frustration/ Lawrence I find this odd. I've upgraded 4 computers with this version without a hitch. This should cheer anyone up if your having problems with linux... http://www.ubergeek.tv/article.php?pid=54 sorry, couldn't resist. |
