Re: Only 2 cpus detected on QuadCore Q9550

This 2 core / 50% conflict is due poor implementation for the upgraders hence the text in the website device profile [nobody reads] and the poorness of the local prefs having removed the option hard core number option, many baffled for the rule works 'lowest of both and rounded down' i.e. 99% on a quad is dealt with as 75%, but at the same time 99% on a 96 core device works as 95 cores, which is meaningful.

Hmm, last time I checked, <max_ncpus_pct> defaults to 100, so anyone upgrading from v5 can get a surprise that all cpu's is used after upgrade, except if they themselves has manually changed their preference...

As for which preference is being used by various clients, a quick test with v6.2.19 reveals it's not using <max_cpus>, so obviously a deprecated opiton isn't included in the v6.xx.xx-managers.

Also, the preference is marked "Enforced by version 6.1+". So, the text on WCG's preference-page about "will be the lesser" doesn't make much sence...

You may have last checked Ingleside, but I do recommend to read the forums before opineing. And this is still WCG support forums and whilst it makes no sense to you, it does to me why this has come about for the upgraders ... it IS poorly implemented and IS an FAQ at WCG.

No idea which of the FAQ's you're talking about, by looking on the titles nothing pops-up...

As for the WCG-text: "If you are using version 6.2 of the software, then the number of processors used will be the lesser of the two fields below."

This text clearly didn't match my experience with v6.2.xx, and a little digging reveals why:
1: WCG asked for re-adding the <max_cpus>-option and using the lowest of the preferences, and this is the behaviour in v6.2.24 - v6.2.28.
2: It's by extension also included in v6.3.16 and v6.3.17, but this bug was quickly catched in alpha-testing, and is fixed in v6.3.18 and later clients.
3: Not for Linux.
4: Not for Mac.
5: Not for windows-v6-clients except v6.2.24 - v6.2.28.

So, more correctly the text should be something like:
"If you are using version 6.2.28 of the software, then the number of processors used will be the lesser of the two fields below. For other v6-client-users, only the %-field is used".

Re: Only 2 cpus detected on QuadCore Q9550

The text was written by native English speakers and I, not a native English speaker understand it. WCG policy stated as that they we're taking the lowest of the 2 to preserve the setting some would have consciously chosen based on cores.

As for quoting the description, to give it it's true and intended meaning here's the full again as reflected in the screenshot I posted earlier in this thread, not the snipped.
If you are using version 6.2 of the software, then the number of processors used will be the lesser of the two fields below. If you are using a version before 6.2, then only the 'at most' field will be used.

It's a text that went with the WCG 6.2.28 release as a successor to the WCG 5.10.45 release. This was the experience encountered by the member opening this thread who's problem has been fixed!
