confused Long running WUs on Ubuntu? [RESOLVED]

The oldest of my crunchers, a P2 400MHz (*) has Ubuntu and BOINC 6.4.5. It's only crunching HCMD2 because of the 6-hours limit. But on several occasions, some WUs keep going for a long time with a low % progress. Right know I aborted one that was on 7% with 9+ hours of CPU time. That machine is not doing anything else besides WCG. In case it's useful, this is the WU:

Created: 08/10/09
Name: CMD2_0068-RADIA.clustersOccur-2V5Y_A.clustersOccur_271_736075_736333_736108_736183

(*) I know, it's very old, but this has been crunching 7x24 almost non-stop since April 2001 with the old United Devices cancer project. In fact this was my first PC I used for DC projects cool

Re: Long running WUs on Ubuntu?

At 6 hours if the WU is at least 60% complete it will let it continue until it completes or runs for a total of 12 hrs where there is a hard stop. Maybe let it run.

Re: Long running WUs on Ubuntu?

Hi,

If there were initially lighter positions in the HCMD2 job on a slow machine and then suddenly an extremely tough one, it does happen that the % freezes for a very long time. Looking at the pos.count in your grand-child task there were just 76 included. Under normal circumstances if at the 12th hour or beyond, the present position is completed, the task will immediately finish and the rest of the task put into a great-grandchild.

Since some projects don't report progress between checkpoints saves which are made when positions, seeds, attempts, dockings are completed within a task, suggest you add the <checkpoint_debug>1</checkpoint_debug> flag to the <log_flags> section of the cc_config.xml file. That shows in the message log when the last save was made. [See the Start Here FAQ Forum index to find help how to do that.]

Re: Long running WUs on Ubuntu?

My quad has processed a great-grand-child of this 0068-RADIA./ 2V5Y work. It had only 25 positions to compute and it has taken 41 minutes. So this work had really tough positions and if your old timer finds one it is sure that it will be busy for a while!

The problem for a machine as slow as yours is that the cut-off feature is applied only when the position computed at 6.00 hours is finished, so if it is a very long one that may largely exceed the theoretical 6 hours.

Just for curiosity and to figure out more precisely how much slower such a machine is would you please post the results of its benchmark?

Generally we use to say that these very old machines are no longer worth the electricity they use but in your case we understand that you keep it for sentimental reasons, and it is just fine that it is still able to process the jobs which are distributed nowadays.

Happy and patient crunching! Jean.

Re: Long running WUs on Ubuntu?

Thanks to all for your replies. Now I understand what's going on with those WUs, I'll just let them run when they appear, whatever time it gets to finish.

Answering JmBoullier question, the usual benchmarks of this computer are:

295 Floating Point Whetstone
530 Integer Dhrystone

It did more than 4 years in UD. After that it was used for several BOINC projects and more recently just for WCG - HCMD2. Here in WCG has 127 days of CPU time (split in several "devices").

A very reliable machine. It's a '98 Dell XPS. Originally with Windows 98 and 128MB of RAM, it now has Ubuntu 8.10 (I need to upgrade) and 384MB of RAM. smile
