Ubuntu and World Community Grid - Resolved

I am new to Linux but I am tired of paying Microsoft. I have installed Ubuntu 9.04 and downloaded the Boinc agent from world commmunity grid. I changed the permissions to executable on the donwloaded file and click on it. This greated a directory called BOINC on my desktop.

I restart and nothing happens. I click on boincmgr and nothing happens. How do I get Boinc to start on Ubuntu?

Re: Ubuntu and World Community Grid

As Lawrence pointed out, this is the easiest way to install... you can remove the BOINC directory you just created. When the install is complete though, you'll need to go to "Applications" -> "System Tools" to open the boinc manager. This will allow you to put in your member name and password from this website. Hope this helps. Feel free to ask any questions as I am running 9.04 on my laptop at the moment :)

Thanks, that worked great. I thought I was suppose to download it from the WCG site but this worked better. And thanks for the pointer of how to actually start the Boinc Manager, I probably would have asked that next.

Re: Ubuntu and World Community Grid - Solved

Mitch,
You can easily create an icon on your desktop if you prefer: simply right click on Boinc Manager in the Applications/System Tools menu to find this option

Cheers. Jean..

Thanks, that makes it easier. I guess I am going to have to learn Linux! I build computers as a hobby, and after I build them, I just put WCG on them and let them run 24x7. I was buying to many copies of Windows and this is a much better solution since I really do not use many of these computers for anythine else but WCG.

One question, when I go to system monitor, under resources, all 4 CPUs show 100%, but when I go into Processes, Boincmgr show 0% which I expect, but no processes who 25%, which I would expect there would be four, like in windows.

Like in Windows you have to select the option "All processes". I hope it is the reason why you don't see them. In Ubuntu it is in the Display submenu (or View, I don't know, mine is in French smile ).

Re: Ubuntu and World Community Grid - Solved

Yes, the boincmgr is what talks with the boinc client. But since you installed the agent through apt-get, it is being run under user id "boinc" instead of your login ID. Also the applications that should be showing up are wcgrid_* applications.

In terminal type in this command to see the top usage processes on your computer.

"top"

press the 'q' button to close it when finished :)

Thanks again....I am learning slowly. I was looking in the system monior and the WCG process do not show there under Processes. They do sho under top, at 100%-98% each for the four CPUs, so it looks like everything is working.
