"A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murderer is less to be feared." -- Marcus Tullius Cicero |

Regarding our landmark health care bill, I'm afraid I have to agree with Marysduby. We liberals won't be happy until we have single-payer health care for all citizens.
As far as the Muslim terrorist incidents, I have to say that the problem is not Islam, it is religious fundamentalism in general. Whether Christian, Jewish, or Muslim, thinking oneself a Jew, a Christian, a Muslim, before an American is a dangerous proposition. Most of us consider ourselves Americans first, and religious (or in my case, irreligious) second. |

The health care reform isn't law yet. Obama can't sign it until the Senate passes it too. Keep in mind that the Senate also has to pass the same bill. If the Senate version differs, it will have to go to a conference committee to work out the differences and then get passed by both chambers again before Obama can sign it into law. Yes, something is going to get passed. With record levels of unemployed and uninsured, too many folks are hurting and scared for nothing to change. I'm fortunate that I can cover my family though what my wife's employer offers. Otherwise, I'd have to pay more for medical coverage than I do for my mortgage payment. At least with my meds, only one isn't something I can get a generic on. Without drug coverage, I'd be paying 200+ dollars a month for that one.

I also feel very strongly about this but I also feel strongly that this is not the place to debate it. ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by RT at Nov 9, 2009 3:10:22 PM] |

I do agree something needs to be done but our leaders are disingenuous. If insurance cos. could operate across state lines like car Ins. i believe rates would be lower, also tort reform. There is a reason why they wont let them? |

Or we could just agree that health care is something that we think everyone should have access to, and so, we make it a right. You can argue this, if you are a Christian, on the grounds that health care coverage is a logical component of a consistent ethic of life, the justification behind opposition to abortion and opposition to doctor assisted suicide. If you believe that only God has the right to choose who lives and dies, you realize that you have an obligation to provide health care to ensure that no one gets sick and screws up God's plan (otherwise, you'd be essentially saying that God does make people sick and die, and I doubt that anyone is vicious enough to say that in 2009...).
If you're a rationalist, on the other hand, you can see that the right to life, without the right to health care, is significantly less meaningful; ergo, we realize that the right to life ought to include the right to health care as a constituent premise. This is just updating the social contract for the 21st century, for all you Locke, Hobbes, Rousseau, Rawls enthusiasts... |

Hopefully the Dems will grow some $ack and start pushing not just a public option, but "Medicare For All." We can hope...

Oops! Sorry, wasn't thinking of it in terms of starting a debate. Just that the House passing a bill is a long way from it becoming law. I can only imaging though how complicated and convoluted health care (in terms of insurance benefits that is) will end up being. Having just been through the annual enrollment period figuring out the options with the coverage thru my wife's employer, I'd rather do my taxes that this. You almost have to be a financial genius to do a fair comparison of the options. Also, having had to deal with COBRA on benefits for this year was an eye opener. It sure seems like you pretty much have to have something major every year to get a decent return on what you have to pay. Still, the thought of not having insurance is scarier.
