Merging computers

I'm not sure if I posted this in the right place but I would like to know if there is a way to merge my computers so that I am showing the correct number of computers.

I am showing I have 13 when I only have the following:

1 Dell Desktop (D820)
2 Dell Laptop XP PRO *
3 Dell Laptop Vista Home Pre. T5750 Studio 1535
4 HP Laptop XP PRO (MCE) T2050
5 HP Laptop Vista T5550
6 Toshiba Laptop XP Home Celeron 350
7 Compaq Laptop XP Home
Old Desktop (Retired)

* This is also listed as a TEST in it's name because I was checking to see if it still overheats. It is used in the winter because of this problem.

At most I have 8 PC's.

Thanks for your time!

Re: Merging computers

No, regrettably not at WCG, yet often requested. Guess it conflicts with the needs to ever grow the number of registered devices that have returned results which are 782,957 for BOINC according the daily exports.

Personally it does not disturb me since the Device manager and device stats by default only list the 'active' devices i.e. those that have returned in the last 7-14 days. The few view still expandable to see all there were in history.

Wish there was a renaming option as we had for the UD agent, so at least they could be structured in such a way that it puts the related devices adjacent in the list. Call them e.g.

Quad-01 090901
Quad-01 080715

The Quad-01 portion identifying as having been from installs of a particular machine. Think if that's done, it's probably just a short step from getting merge going.

oh well

Re: Merging computers

OK thanks, I was hoping so I could bring the PC's together with matching CPU. Just have to be more careful when naming my PC's. However I had been planning to remove the "TEST" off of the one Dell Laptop now that I know there is no way to keep it from over heating other than an "operation". Money I don't have right now!

Re: Merging computers

WCG Techs have done most everything in attempting to identify if an install is a new machine or a known one. There are a couple of files such as account_www.worldcommunitygrid.org.xml, that if you keep them in the target data dir and maintain same IP (internal) and OS name on a rebuild it should be able to recognize these. There's a FAQ lurking in the Start Here forum elaborating on this.

Re: Merging computers

Hi Sekerob,
I have a simple question smile :
- How can I retrieve the unique "host ID" for a specific host ?
Indeed, boincstats and free-DC show "host IDs" which don't match with the value of "host_cpid" in "client_state.xml".
I have to say that I am a little bit confused.
In advance, I thank you for your response.
Cheers,
Yves

<host_cpid> on a host is hashed with your email-address before it's being shown on projects web-page or exported to stats-sites. It's probably done this way to make sure no-one tries to use someone-else's host_cpid, even it's not really any point to do this...

Re: Merging computers

Hi Sekerob,
I thank you for the answer.
Initially I did plan to re-use host-ID I created in my "young boinc years" trying different configuration which are now inactive.
Reading the details you provided, I think that I should forget this approach.
Cheers,
Yves

Hi Sekerob,

just one question, what about crash disk? because of electrical failure,
i had te replace my HDD 2 times. I was'nt be able to save and restore
data you explain. So now i have 3 units named RICCO for the same PC.
because of that, in KWSN statistics my CPID is linked to 11 hosts ID
almost i have (or had) only 6 physical computers.

Sorry but i think that's not a logical position from WCG to not allow merging computers

Thanks for your answer, hace a nice week-end

Richard

who ever claimed WCG was logical? I as well wish I could merge my hosts as I have several now that are from the same computer(s), but I have given up on ever being able to do it here.

Yes but I am stubborn and I'm not going to drop the case like that.
I suppose the development of server code for BOINC must be tedious
but this is not the fact of all the projects? If WCG needs help,
I can only advise him to get in touch with developers of other sites
who have a priori been no problem to implement this function.
Sometimes brainstorming is needed ...

Good week to all
