Closer cooperation between Linux and World Community Grid not directed against Windows

Hello everybody,

I would like to ask, whether a closer coopertion between linux and World Community Grid would be possible.

The reason I ask are difficulties installing Uptdates of the BOINC client under linux.

I know, it certainly is possible to install updates, but as far as I know, I have to change the ending of the downloaded BOINC file in order to make it executable, then go to the so called console and execute it.

I tried and tried, but I did not make it.

Linux offers two applications which make installing and updating easier:

The so called application Manager and the updates manager.

Under Ubuntu BOINC is available in the applications mangager, indeed, but a s far as I know, the Version of the Client offered is really quite old.

So Ubuntu Users installing BOINC with the help of Linuxes application manager automatically get an old version as far as I know .

Unfortunately the BOINC Version Number cannot be seen in the application manger.
If possible, the version number should be added in the application manager.

And I have never seen an automatic update proposed with my Linux update manger.
If possible, BOINC updates shoud be proposed by linuxes update mangager.

I would like to inform, that the machine running under this User would not contribute at all if Linux did not offer BOINC in the application manger.

I bought the machine naked, without operating system only for BOINC. The machine is in the cellar and runs only BOINC all day long. It is a fairly fast machine (industrial worksation with two processeors) But I could buy it only because it was not new and cheap. And the point is: All those cheap and fast machines were offered without Operating System.

So linux is without alternative, if you want to have a cheap (used) and nevertheless fast machine for BOINC.

Therefore, closer Cooparation with linux would really make sense.

My dream would be, that every user installing Liunx would be asked by the System during the installation process of Linux automatically (important!)the following question: " Do you want to install the BOINC Client together with your System? Yes | No. The Linux Team suggests to choose Yes because BOINC allows you to do really important humanitarian scientific research. If you want to find out more about it, please go to www.worldcommunitygrid.org.
The Linux Team strongly supports BOINC und would suggest you to choose "Yes"
The Linux Team informs you, that you have the possibility to uninstall BOIC at any time in a comfortable way with the help of Linuxes application manager.
Your Linux team.

I would be interested to know on how many Linux machines BOINC is runnig at the time and which distribution of Linux users running Linux operate.
Is this information available?

All the best to all people helping to keep the grid running. Especially the techs doing important work which is in my opinion too seldomly appriciated.
Keep going. As long as I can pay for the electricity, I will go on crunching.
Greetings
Martin Schnellinger

Re: Closer cooperation between Linux and World Community Grid not directed against Windows

Personally I don't like the idea of BOINC installing automatically with every installation of an OS. Yes it would get us more power, but it would also damage the reputation, i.e. "BOINC, ah that is that bloody annoying program that always wants to install when I install something else. I never want anything to do with it". A bit like Google toolbar that tries to install itself with every program I try to install recently it seems.

As to the version in the Ubuntu repository, is it older than the WCG recommended version (6.2.18 for Linux I think?) In any case the BOINC version isn't that exciting as the actual work is being done by the sience applications for which you get the latest version anyway.

Re: Closer cooperation between Linux and World Community Grid not directed against Windows

Hello Sunnyboy,
I thought about your reply.
Please consider, that installing an Operating System is not a task a normal user does once a week.
The operating system is installaded once and than runs for a relativly long period.
This is especially true for Linux.
Why?
Well, Linux still is the Operating System not made for games in the first place.
And it is the games, that make you install the Operating System over and over again. The usual procedure of a normal gamer is as follows:
He or she has one or more games on his PC. When bored whith those games, he uninstalls one of them and then isntalls the next game.

Its this process of permanent installing new programms that makes a System instable and as a consequence you have to install the Operating System again.

With linux, you usually do not install games but mostly other things.

Coming to a conclusion: In my experience, Linux just keeps doing its job and I never had to reeinstall it.

So compared with the really important work World Community Grid does, the question of kindly asking a person installing Linux whether he or she might be willing to install world community Grid together with his or her operating system seems to me really neglectable. And a hint during Linux instalation would spread the knowlege about World Community Grid not only a little but drastically. I think World Community Grid should contact the Linux Community.
WCG banner on UBUNTU www page would be very good, too.

I do not think about a pop up in a browser appearing every now and then but about a polite question once per year maybe.

Nevertheless, thanks for the hint that the uptdates are not so important.
However, BOINC uptates with the Linux uptdate manager still would be helpful
Sincerely
Martin Schnellinger

Re: Closer cooperation between Linux and World Community Grid not directed against Windows

There are so many variations of Linux that Berkeley only tests for Ubuntu. Best is to use the version provided by the Distro's package manager such as Synaptic for the least install hassle. WCG's banner (IBM as sponsor) on www.Ubuntu.com . Would that go down well over there? (long debate following here)

Auto update for BOINC. Now that would give me the creeps. The number of 'recommended' releases that actually break things are quite extensive. This is why the WCG kit for windows actually points at WCG's own site to limit the 'there's a new version' messages.

2 quick euro cents.

Re: Closer cooperation between Linux and World Community Grid not directed against Windows

Hello everybody,
Give me the creeps means drive me crazy, right?

Well, in Linux the updates for all applications are announced quite discretely in the right corner of the screen, so even numerous updates do not really disturb the user.

So, automatic updates with linuxes update manager should be a faciliation (more convieniece) rather than a disturbance.

Boinc's updates would just be one of the many updates promted to the user anyway, so I only can once again recommend using this way of installation.

But the most important thing still is to me the announcment of WCG to the user during installation of linux.

A lot of people would get to know World Community Grid. There are, unfortunately, so many people who just do not know.

So, please, do contact the linux community with this question.

Yours
