The article:
----------------------------------------"It has been 20 years in the making but researchers at the University of Western Ontario say they’re confident their HIV vaccine is only months away from being approved for human trials. Lead researcher Dr. Chil-Yong Kang said Thursday the approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration can come as soon as two or three months. “We’ve been working on the HIV virus since 1987. This is a very important day for us,” Dr. Kang said while attending a conference in South Korea. “It is a very important milestone for us, this vaccine.” The SAV001-H vaccine has already been tested on monkeys and rats with no side effects. Dr. Kang, a London, Ont. virology professor, said human DNA is similar to that of these animals, so researchers are optimistic the same vaccine would not produce any adverse effects in humans. The vaccine was submitted recently to the U.S. for approval because that country already has established systems in place to check out vaccines, Dr. Kang said. If approved there, he added, worldwide acceptance of the drug will quickly follow. There are also more HIV-positive patients in the U.S. than in Canada, which will make it easier to do a human trial comparing how the vaccine attacks the virus in volunteers. Dr. Kang, 65, admits that it will still “take years” before results from human trials can be completed. A South Korean drug research company and its Canadian subsidiary, Sumagen Canada, have obtained patents already for the vaccine in 70 countries. The Human Immunodeficiency Virus -- or HIV -- attacks the immune system and results in a chronic illness that may lead to the disease known as AIDS. The Public Health Agency of Canada says that, on average, it takes 10 years before HIV infection progresses into AIDS. The virus can be transmitted into the bloodstream through unprotected sex, sharing of needles and pregnancy. It is estimated that as many as 60,000 Canadians live with the HIV virus. AIDS was first recognized worldwide in 1983. No proven vaccine has ever been produced." http://www.canada.com/health/Canadian+made+va...+trial/1752375/story.html Interesting.... ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by damir1978 at Aug 12, 2009 1:08:33 PM] |

definatly intresting.. hope it goes well.
----------------------------------------corse how many years before it finaly comes out Personaly i think they need to allow human testing to be done earlier on alot of the major diseases out there. i mean if you have AIDS and know you only have a short time to live (compaired to how long drug trials take) wouldnt you want the drug now even if it had side effects? ![]() |

this article is about a vaccine, i don't think it's a cure if you already have the disease.

You don't need a cure if you have a vaccine.
----------------------------------------Besides, with a vaccine you have progress to a cure for the poor generation that already got it. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Aug 8, 2009 11:13:39 PM] |

You don't need a cure if you have a vaccine. Besides, with a vaccine you have progress to a cure for the poor generation that already got it. yes we do need both a cure and a vaccine. not everyone will get a vaccine, and some people may be alergic to the vaccine. yes word of a posible vaccine is great but unfortunatly people think that cause your vaccinated that your 100% immune this is not always the case. i know some people who are rich and poor... and i dont think that your comment about the cure for the poor generation is in bad taste. remember some countries they do not have the money to get a vaccine for everything dosnt mean they have less of a right to live than we do ![]() |

Eh, I didn't mean poor in the sense of actually being poor.
But still, at least a potential vaccine would be something considering the lack of a cure or vaccine for this horrible disease. |

Could the originator of this thread, or a nice Admin, please edit the first post and move the link to the end of the post, as when the thread is displayed in the Recent Posts list, it displays the link which is so wide it pushed the rest of the columns off the right of the page....cheers

Bad hair day (for your computer ;?) The underlying link is not wider than my display, certainly wraps properly here under FFX 3.5, probably the thread column not showing to be than say 60 character all told.
----------------------------------------Maybe the new admin, ErikaT could facilitate ;>)
