Well, harry_i_c is closing in on becoming our next MOT Millionaire. Say hi sometime. Darth, you're now halfway there. Nice and steady work. Special congrats to TheRoket on reaching your first points milestone! I believe they're our first member from Lithuania.

Dave how did your appointment go?--look out for the ant on your screen

Let's just say that my Linksys is doing much better than I. Hope you don't mind if I borrow him for a bit.

I had a NetGear that died a very quick death. My Dlink has been running for several years now. I think routers are a bit of a commodity item so one brand is not much different or better than another. Seems more like the luck of the draw.

Mike, when you get to your machines after you lose connectivity, are they still up and crunching? Are any ethernet (wire) connected or is everything wireless?

They are still up and crunching. One though (laptop) automatically downloaded a windows update and then re-booted, so it wasn't..

Only one computer is ethernet connected, and it is the one which is connected to the router.. (which I don't have working correctly at the moment.. grr..) The others are wireless..

Dr. Mike..

Okay, when this happens, if you take the ethernet cable from your DSL modem or cable modem and connect that to that one machine, you'll see if you then have network connectivity. If so, the problem is with the wireless router. If not, it's your ISP. When my router loses connectivity, normally there's been a momentary blip in the power. Usually it's enough to set the time on something blinking 12:00 but not always. To fix, I disconnect the power to the router and wait a couple of minutes. Waiting less doesn't work for some reason. When I plug it back in, the lights on it start their usual blinking. Most of the time, but not always, they're all on steady with no blinking when the router's on the fritz. Once the router is reset this way, then each machine has to reconnect to it. The Vista machine normally reconnects on its own in a minute or so. My XP machine usually wants me to disconnect from and connect to the router to get back to normal.

At my current rate, I should hit 1,000,000 right before Christmas, unless we have a hot September. Could be sooner, though ... wink

That is important - when power cycling, leave it turned off for at least a full minute. It takes that long for the routing table to be wiped out from its memory. It also resets other tables and logs that the router builds.

So THAT'S why the time matters! Shoulda figured. Thanks.
