I'm looking at another system and have the following question.
----------------------------------------Which is better a quad or i7(basically a quad w/HT). I've heard that floating point isn't that much faster on HT. Also if you have any additional information on this choice please share (still researhing this purchase). Thanks ![]() |

It may depend on the program used for each project. Some have about a 25% improvement, some little.
----------------------------------------In the meantime, there is always the hex core i9 on the horizon to debate, with 12 HT. To throw in another wrinkle, the alternative of two AMD quad cores may be more cost effective. Clock speed is not directly comparable.

Hi PecosRiverM,
Money. Intel charges for the i7. Ignoring money, the i7 is the current champ. It is a matter of your preferences regarding cooling, fan noise and cost. Different people will go different ways. I hate fan noise. Lawrence |

They crunch very nicely. Recently I have been experimenting with CEP HT on and Off. With HT off each WU takes ~4 hours and with HT on they take ~6 hours. I would much rather return 32 WUs per day with HT on instead of 24 with HT off
The i7 run pretty hot but they can take it. Depending on how you set your system up you may get a lot of fan noise. Mine is in a separate room and set to "standard" fan settings instead of "turbo" so I only notice the noise if I am sitting in that room which really does not bother me anyway. Once we get through summer (temps ~80-85 F) I will make the machine go faster and also be able to turn the fans down to "slow". Steve |

I had seen a quad I7 advertised on a search for I7 with Google. Is this new? Does anyone have any experience with this. How long do you think it will be before we go beyond quad to 8 or 16 cores, and will cooling be a big problem?

The nice thing about the hexcore (rumored to be released Q1 2010) is that it should be a direct plug in upograde for the current i7. When they come out we will have to see if I just upgrade or if I buy a whole new unit.
