A month and a half to go from 700 to 680, brutal.
----------------------------------------I'm down a comp since i moved. Been watching power consumption, In a brand new house they put in high efficiency furnace, tankless water heater, but STUPID ENERGY BURNING LIGHT FIXTURES EVERYWHERE. I replaced the 4 incandescent bulbs in the basement with 1 CFL and a LED bulb (Phillips prize winning bulb wanted to try it). But my kitchen, stupid track lighting bulbs aren't normal size... And my wife well she likes light (I'm a basement cave dweller). So I gotta take a bulb in and see if I can find a match. Anyway, for comptuers, I am idling the Alienware (I7 920), And for my wifes I7 930, going to swap that out for the I7 3770K I just bought. I checked the 930 it's running 240+ watts an hour. My I7 2500K is running 77 watts an hour, so the I7 3770K should be less than 100. We used 780 KW last month, I want to get that down to 500. And only going to have one video card in all 3 comps. Luckily it's energy smart (the GTX 670) if I'm not using it it's not burning anything. ![]() |

A couple of days ago I noticed that IBM had taken over first place in all three categories. Yesterday I recorded their cpu time and the number of results. By comparing them to today's stats I found that IBM is now getting 138,555 results today which is very close to a million a week. I guess they will more than double their number of results by the end of this year. 138,555 results is 12,8% of all the results so IBM is contributing an eighth of all the results. They are doing a little better in cpu time (55 years out of 431 total years). I would not be surprised if they have 50 million results by the end of this year. There are suppose to be over a half of a million members and IBM is so dominating that withing a couple of years I would think that IBM would quit this organization because I am almost sure IBM could generate enough results to keep all the scientists very busy.

Interesting couple of posts. As far as I'm concerned, the more the IBM 'team' contribute the better, the same as any other team. I find it unlikely they'll ever contribute so much they'll decide they don't need the rest of us, if that's what RicktheBrick meant.
----------------------------------------The way I see it, I contribute what I contribute - someone else contributing so much more than me doesn't change my contribution. On the other hand though, skgiven's sig does make it clear that there are many other BOINC-based DC projects out there these days, including a lot that appear to be the medical research ones I prefer. Some of them look rather small and unstable from their websites, and I'll stick to the stability WCG usually provides for now. But good to see there's a lot of choice around in case WCG ever don't have any interesting medical projects (hint: cancer, MS) for me to crunch. ![]() (previously known as 'proxima' on SETI, UD, distributed folding, FaD, and Rosetta) |

I'm sure there is plenty(or could be) of research to go around. Imagine being able to complete an AIDS science project in days instead of months. I would love to see more major corporations with large numbers of computers get behind WCG. And if that make my contribution seem insignificant with the benefit of a major increase in the science done... I'll be the happiest person in the world! ![]() |

They are promising terraflop laptops/notebooks/ultathins/tablets WHATEVER you want to call them, by 2020. We will always be making a useful contribution.

I have been doing this for a number of years now. I was a member of united devices before I became a member of world community grid. In the past 10 years or so I have come from single core computer that used dial up to 6 core computers that use broadband. The 6 core computer does probably around 50 times what my first single core computer accomplished. I do not think this trend will stop in the near or far future. So the question is how much did it cost IBM in just electrical cost to produce its 138,555 results and how much did it cost the members in electrical cost to produce the same number of results. I do not know those figures but I think the electrical cost to IBM are so much lower that the difference would pay for all the hardware the members are using in less than 5 years. Since IBM knows the answer it is up to them to decide if this organization is worth it. I just hope that the data that my computers are generating is used before they make a computer that can generate the same data in seconds and at a much lower electrical cost.

All interesting points, RicktheBrick. Although you could turn that on its head as well: If processing power is going to keep increasing, and the cost decreasing, effectively forever, then by your argument you'd never start - it's *always* going to be cheaper and quicker in five years' time than it is now. But I do take your point, and it's interesting.
----------------------------------------Like you, I've crunched for years - and no doubt my first year's work at United Devices could now be done in a few days. But hopefully the work and results from that hit the public domain years ago, which may have led onto other developments for example in the docking software which we're running now (and BOINC itself) - so in effect we're already benefiting from that work. That's how I see it, anyway... ![]() (previously known as 'proxima' on SETI, UD, distributed folding, FaD, and Rosetta) |
