To all the crunchers with "little" computer power. Just a reminder that the whole point of WCG is to get all of us little people together to do big things!
----------------------------------------I started with a single core in 05 (and with UD earlier) and for some years where I was almost homeless, (not for money but work was erratic and moving around) I crunched nothing. Since 08 when I got married and rooted in place, bought a new computer and took off running. It's all about doing what you can when you can. Now about points, surprisingly I'm down to 961 (hit 999 mar 31 but lost a comp so thought I was gonna go back up but still doin ok. P.S. Partially due to all the electricity I use for crunching (about 250 watts each for 2 I7s plus a bit for a laptop) That is at least 360 kw a month almost half my electricity for the month... I'm having a solar installer come do an estimate for my house. I live in Canada but in the sunniest province (alberta). We just point our solar panels closer to the horizon :) Alberta gets most of it's electrical generation from Coal. We all know (should know) that coal is bad coming out of the ground, bad burning it and bad disposing of it (coal ash has been linked to cancer). There is quite a bit of wind energy going up in southern Alberta but solar is still slow to pick up. I'm thinking if I can afford it, a 5 KW system. Ok I can't afford it, but I can pay on it. Also I want to build a new system but am waiting for a system even better than sandy bridge (and it's supposedly 17 percent faster than a similarly clocked I7 and less power). We will see how that goes. EDIT: One interesting thing I did to save money was get a Magic Jack (available in US and Canada) It hooks to your computer then you plug your phone base station into it. It is costing me 2 bucks a month for all the local and long distance in Canada and US. The $30 or $40 I was spending for a land line is paying my electricity usage for all computers (but not the administrative and distribution fees sadly). Be aware if you use phone while downloading a lot it has issues but simple surfing seems ok) It's a nice alternative to just getting rid of the land line and using cell phones. I'm not trying to sell it, just making my computers earn there keep since they are on anyway ![]() ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Jack007 at Apr 23, 2011 4:00:02 PM] |

I also started small. With one very slow desktop. I also stopped for a while. Then I got a dual core desktop, then I recruited my wife's laptop, and later a laptiop for me and just a few weeks ago I got myself an i7. Now this last guy really flies and it has made a lot of difeerence. It used to ake forever to get a bronze badge, now I am going for Green and I am in the top 10,000.
----------------------------------------Today I just got to 5 years Total Run Time (y:d:h:m:s) (Rank) 5:000:11:16:37 (#13,735) ) Points Generated (Rank) 4,790,570 (#9,798) Keep on crunching!! ![]() |

Now ranked 598th for points (41.2M), after being pushed out to 601 for a day and sitting at 600 for a couple.
RunTime not far behind at 612th and 641st for results returned. It's promising to see that at present,
400th spot is under 53M 300th spot is under 65M 200th spot is under 82M 100th spot is under 141M
500th spot - 66K 400th spot - 77K 300th spot - 92K 200th spot - 128K 100th spot - 213K I'm presently doing about 84K per day for WCG. So I might reach the WCG top 500 next year. I think I would be happy enough with that, and just try to stay there. The top 300 looks beyond me, and I think it would take several years to reach 400th, but who knows. [OT]Jack, unfortunately the energy savings/performance gain per Watt is being negatively offset by the increases in Electric, and most of our penny pinching saving scheems are being countered by tax rises. By the time we are at 28/22nm rigs that use 25% less power the cost of the power will have risen by more than 30% and the tax on the systems could well make them too expensive. Bad news for crunching - unless genuine cheap energy becomes widespread in the next couple of years. Highly unlikely given the powers that be. |
