As far as RAM, speed of processor and bus what is best combination for WCG? I understand more cores and faster better but how important is RAM for these projects? Is past 3, 6 or 8 gb of RAM a waste for speeding up the completion time on a work unit ? Condidering a new computer purchase and as no matter what I buy sufficient for my other needswas wandering how to increase my productivity for WCG? Thanks.

Number of cores and core speed are what determine your output here at WCG. Bus speed and RAM speed have very little, if any effect. The amount of RAM you need varies by how you use your computer and RAM usage by WCG varies by project. Anywhere from a few dozen KB per WU to 200MB+ per WU. My personal recommendation is 4GB of RAM for a quad core(AMD Phenom, Intel C2Q) and 6GB for an Intel i7(4 cores, 8 threads). Of course using more than 3GB of RAM necessitates a 64 bit OS.

Hi,
----------------------------------------Running Boinc for WCG since two years on a double quad, I can attest that 4 GB for 8 cores is absolutely sufficient. I did never experience more than 2.5 GB used by computing 8 WUs simultaneously; the usual average is about 1.3 GB (including WinXP Pro 64). If you wish to run challenging applications at the same time, you have to increase the size of the available RAM accordingly. Cheers, Yves |

Yes sir. You're correct. One step at a time. I didn't mean to rush anyone. However, I would like to see badges for 5 years, 10 years, and 20 (or 25) years though. Past that, maybe 50 years and then 100 years. My thinking on that is that it shows dedication. A lot of people jump on a new project long enough to get a gold badge. One year isn't too difficult either (I think it should take 1 year for gold). Five years (and longer) is definitely showing commitment to the project. Even if things stay the same (as far as badges are concerned) I'll keep doing what I have been. Some of my badges will change colors. Some of them won't. Some of the projects have ended so what I have in those projects is all I'll ever have. The Energy Wasting Project most likely will not go beyond gold as every time I've checked the forums I see that that project is STILL (more than 6 months since I quit crunching it) producing a LOT of errors as that forum is FULL of post about errors. Why WCG is still allowing a project that wastes so much CPU time to run is beyond me. Regarding your post, we do not intentionally "waste" CPU time. The software used for the first phase of the energy project has some unpredictability in how it will process given work units. Many of the longer running work units produced acceptable answers, but some ran so long that cutoff limits were reached. We are sorry we could not predict these cases ahead of time, but that is the nature of research sometimes. When the researchers find a way to handle the problem work units, we have adjusted things accordingly. For example, recently we found some work units were having problems, so we canceled those and the researchers submitted different work units which avoided the problem. All of the CPU time contributes to the research and learning process for the researchers. In the cases where problems end up not giving users points credit, that is unfortunate, but we try to work out a solution to avoid these cases as we come upon them. Sometimes, this involves code changes which requires testing etc. and can cause delays in sending new work units. We are sorry that you experienced some of these problems and hope you will continue contributing. The first phase of the Clean Energy Project is nearing completion and hopefully there will not be any more such problems in this phase. The next phase will use some new programs which are especially large and complicated. So please bear with us as we go through our growing pains in getting this software to run smoothly for the next phase of the project. Please keep in mind that all of the work here is research, and as such has some risk of having unforeseen problems. Thank you for your understanding and support. |

It's great to see the new badges. My request: a last badge: the 10 cpu-year badge :) Why stop at 10 years? How about 5 year, 10 year, and 20 year badges? I'm sure that a lot of people on the team that I'm on already have 10 years on some projects and probably some that have more than 20 years. Perhaps it should stick to the current scale: Apart from the Bronze-Silver relationship, each step up the badges requires double the previous one (e.g. from Silver... 1.5 months, 3 months, 6 months, 1 year, 2 years). The next set of badges would logically be 4 years, 8 years and 16 years. As a moderate cruncher (I now only have 4 devices running, compared to the current average of ~2.83 devices per member), I'm not anywhere near the capabilities of the power crunchers. I don't see me getting much beyond Sapphire anyway and probably nowhere near it in some projects, so this isn't for my benefit - just keen to keep to a current trend. (OK, my 2 current Sapphires have between 4 and 5 years, so would therefore qualify for the next badge under this system which they wouldn't get if the next badge was for 5 years... but it's still a valid point think!) |

I would like to see the top badge be "Diamond" with a run time of 100 years. I would further suggest this badge be a white background with a black border edge. LMK if you would like me to work up the graphic....
I ran everything gold, including my beta badge. The new badges were welcome, but will only provide a small diversion while I turn them all blue..... I would be proud to wear the "Diamond" badge for HCC! Thx, Bob (And yes, the badges are an interesting diversion for me to achieve. It must be since I appear to have some level of OCD, don't post much here, so who would see the badges other than me? ) |

Would it not be a good idea if teams got badges as well, they may not show up on the forums, but teams could show off their bright blue badges anyways.
----------------------------------------Would also let those users who do not have a cunching empire of multi-cores, to work together as a team to get the new badges. I don't think, given the fact that they alread display the run time by project for the teams, it would take a major site rebuild. ![]() |

Team Badge has already been suggested http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=22281
----------------------------------------But of course I don't know the status of it. I also think that would be a good idea. |

We are definitely considering adding team badges, but at this time we are working on other items.
