Welcome Brian
One of the latest news is this to my believe Vaccine development: Serum institute to get H1N1 sample 27 Jun 2009 City-based vaccine major Serum Institute of India (SII) will get the virus strain of H1N1 flu from the UK-based National Institute for Biological Standards and Control (NIBSC) in a week's time. The Drug Controller General Of India (DCGI) had sent a confirmation of the same to SII few days back. Receiving the virus strain is the first step towards the production of an indigenous vaccine for the H1N1 influenza. SII is one the three pharama majors in India to receive the virus strain, the other being are Bharat Biotech International Limited in Hyderabad and Panacea Biotech Ltd in New Delhi. |

Several countries have already passed material for vaccine production to manufacturers some weeks ago. It's a pandemic, no denying. The last wiki update shows that it's right at my doorstep too:
----------------------------------------http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:H1N1_Italy_Map.svg It's mild on most and bad with complications, the biggest worry still mutations of the virus. The recommendation (strong) continues not to take preventative medicine such as Tamiflu, for then that medicine WILL LOOSE IT'S EFFECTIVENESS. It would only promote mutation i.e. the virus developing resistance. Anyway, virologists all say the second wave in October/November will be when it's going to hit hard on the Northern Hemisphere, Autumn-Winter. By then the vaccine for this version should be ready. Prediction from one country: 30% of population to get infected without vaccination... with mass vaccination, 10% could still catch it. Can't stop it, but adopting the Japanese way of face-masks to protect others from being infected by you the world can take example by. And, what I learned long time ago: Don't touch your eyes, an entry point too!

Enough vaccine for 4.9 billion at best, says WHO
Companies could potentially turn out 4.9 billion doses of vaccine against the new H1N1 influenza strain within a year under the best-case scenario, WHO officials said on Tuesday. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said it was essential for drugmakers to work with governments to avert the worst potential impacts of the new H1N1 strain... |

Mild I wrote? Well, latest is, not so. It's a deep penetrating virus via the respiratory system, so research has shown and tests on ferrets confirm which makes people more sick than from regular flu.
