Restarting Tasks

Hello,
I'm having a problem with my tasks. Sometimes, in the middle of computing (for example 20% finished) the task restarts itself. It says 0% finished, but computing time remains the same (It took for example 10 hours to compute those 20%, and after the reset, it still shows the task has been running for 10 hrs). And after the reset, project status says it is "Running, high priority", but normally it says something like "running" in my language...

So is this normal or is there any problem with my computer or something... ?

Tahnks in advance for helping...

Re: Restarting Tasks

Hello Jakub.Asgard,
The first question is 'which version of BOINC are you running'? The best way to start this investigation is for you to post the Messages tab after a boot. This will telll everyone what sort of system we are dealing with.

Re: Restarting Tasks

Seeing nothing in the log that suggests your settings are not okay to run FLU successfully.

The deadlines for FLU are normally 10 days, but if the proportional day progress results in an extrapolation that projects the completion time after the deadline, you'll get the Running, High Priority.

You speak of sometimes doing this, so you've run FLU before successfully [just making sure]? This project same as a few other WCG project use AutoDock to do the simulations and if it cant find the optimal desired path it will try again and go back a little, few tenth to 1 or 2 percent, but never 20%, so like to also see the Result log of a previously completed task that did this. Just the parts where is says restarting etc as there can be hundreds of lines. Go to the Result Status page and click on the Status link to get to the Result log.

edit: clarified para 2.

Is the machine running maybe hot, remove dust, and have you done recent memory testing... could be a funky intermittent bit? Definitely not normal to do this.

Re: Restarting Tasks

This has been happening recently with FLU projects and if I remember correctly, some other projects did the same thing. It doesn't happen with every task i get, it looks it's random thing...
But it certainly makes a mess with the points, because when finished, it looks like the computing took more time than it actually did...

I'll wait for this task to finish and then i can look into the result log if there is any explanation why it restarted during computing...

Re: Restarting Tasks

Are you getting Zero Status type messages in the message log round about when this happens? That's why we like Result Logs, but the BOINC Manager shows them real time.

Set your Antivirus program to exclude 30.6.2009 10:28:20||Data directory: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Data aplikací\BOINC from scanning if not done already. It's save.

Re: Restarting Tasks

No, the only thing displayed in messages log when the restart happens is something like this (with right time, of course, this is an example):
30.6.2009 12:43:26|World Community Grid|Restarting task flu10401e0262_100217_0 using flu1 version 604

Re: Restarting Tasks

Is the client computing 24/7 or is it being paused at times?

Please edit the cc_config.xml file in the data dir and add

<cc_config>
<log_flags>
<task>1</task>
<file_xfer>1</file_xfer>
<cpu_sched>1</cpu_sched>
<sched_op_debug>1</sched_op_debug>
<checkpoint_debug>1</checkpoint_debug>
</log_flags>
<options>

Save and go to advanced menu and do read config file. Let it run for a while then post the log, all the lines, not just one.

Did you set the antivirus exclusion?

Re: Restarting Tasks

I've set the antivirus exclusion and the computer is not computing 24/7. It doesn't run overnights and sometimes I pause it during the day.

I've edited the config file and did as you've said, here's the log:

Re: Restarting Tasks

Well, atm I'm parking this to clear mind and have someone else have a stab. Suggest though to disable the throttle and set the CPU time to 100% in you local preferences, which you are using according the override log entry. The BOINC throttle, default 60% is a dog and known to cause problems for one or the other. Get TThrottle and set temperature you like the system to run at. This will provide a smooth run, and from experience now several thousand jobs going valid running this.
