Are those columns not wide enough to see the full text of that science application and version, or the entire name of that extra long task you received for the Help Cure Muscular Dystrophy project? They never are, but the solution is to simply go with your mouse to the item of interest and in a fraction of a second the balloon tip shows up to provide the complete information. Active buttons in the left margin or any field of interest has this feature.
