Yes, I keep the disk write time at once per 2 hours. Assuming that the flash memory can survive 10000 write cycles the flash drive will only last about 2.28 years...

I have also published a Diskless Linux Distribution, specialy for BOINC.
It boots from a USB stick or from a diskless server. The distro includes the tools to setup quick and easily a USB boot, HDD installation, diskless server and the diskless clients. It's available at www.dotsch.de/Dotsch_UX |

Be warned, that Berkeley had the brilliant idea of setting in some 6.6 versions (it sure behaves still like that under 6.6.28) to have the checkpoint rule apply system wide, not per core. On a 4 core, that's 8 hours then before ;>)
----------------------------------------Yes, just checked, the frequently checkpointing HCMD2 does one with intervals of at least double the setting on my duo. David 20 Mar 2009 3166 - client: reduce frequency of writing state file: 3167 1) multiply checkpoint period by # of cores (or GPUs) There's no reversal note in the developers checkin log till now!

The direct http/ftp links dont seem to work and im only getting 60KB/s on the torrent :S Thank you very much for the hint ! The ftp server working again. But the bandwith would only be slightly faster than the current torrent. I am working on the http server... Perhaps I will seed this torrent for you :D Thank you very much. |

Soruce SlashDot, did not know that PXE had not been updated by Intel since 1999
----------------------------------------http://download.intel.com/design/archives/wfm/downloads/pxespec.pdf But, there is hope in the Etherboot project http://etherboot.org/wiki/index.php And a programmer explaining: http://blog.ksplice.com/2010/05/scalable-day-to-day-diskless-booting/ Also see Marc Andre Wyss post too Tutorial - Diskless Ubuntu clients for BOINC crunching http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread_thread,28424 Hmmm, might revive the old Shuttle P4 to test this all out. The disk is dead, but not the CPU.
