I am all for using clean language in public and private but doesn't it seem a bit too radical for them to edit that word? I guess they must have a program that scans the entire set of forums looking for those words and then they go look at the individual posts. Lot of unproductive work. By unproductive I mean it does not further any of the research. Hopefully this person could do something productive if they did not have to spend time editing. It just occured to me that they could (or I could) write some code that would dis-allow the words they wanted banned during the posting process thereby preventing them from ever showing up on the fourm. Seems to me that I have seen that elsewhere. ![]() Thought for the day: No matter where you go...................there you are. First, your quotation is wonderfully Buddhist, but is from the Beatles, right? Second, as far as censoring the forums, we're all grown-ups here and even if we're not, we use these words. Expletives penetrate all aspects of our lives, from my reaction to my alarm clock, to a casual f-word dropped by a homeless person, to professors who occasionally swear to drive home their points. After all, if you use a computer, then you're exposed to swear words. I just feel bad for poor CIH. Your comments are interesting. The origin of the "No matter where....." is unknown to me. I likely heard it somewhere but that fact is long lost. My father told me many years ago that swearing was the curse of those with inadequate vocabularies; and that emotion can more adequately be expressed without their use. While I don't think that is entirely true, it has a great deal of merit. My observation is that these words rapidly lose impact from the time they are first used and most often only detract from the intended message. Yes, I have been around construction sites and other places where no sentence is complete without them and while I don’t mind them, I merely find them unnecessary and even confusing. Funny how we live in different worlds while sharing this one. Edit> Thought for this day: In just two days, tomorrow will be yesterday. ![]() ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by RT at Jun 15, 2009 3:16:32 PM] |

...My father told me many years ago that swearing was the curse of those with inadequate vocabularies; and that emotion can more adequately be expressed without their use. While I don't think that is entirely true, it has a great deal of merit... Oh that is SO true. The best illustration of it I have ever witnessed is the *real* expression of "Southern". True "Southern" is English spoken with a maximum of civilty and politeness no matter the message or its target. It is an experience you never forget. Imagine one person telling another where to go, how to get there and what to do when they get there, do it in a way to have the recipient of the message express honest and profuse thanks at such a kind and complimentary thought, and yet have everyone else who heard the message know exactly what was truly meant! I have only witnessed that once in my lifetime and it leaves you numb and awed. Language can be a very subtle but effective weapon. |

When I was a kid I had an uncle whose fishing buddy was from southern Georgia. He could fillet a person like a fish without ever using one word that, in another context, could not be used in church. It is quite an art form.On the other side, I am reminded of a moment of my life. It was 1969 and my sorry rear was west of Da Nang. It was around midnight and a bunch of us were leaned against an APC listening to the squawk on its radio. Some 2nd louie was under fire, running low and needed ammo. I don’t think he had casualties as he was not requesting a Medivac but he desperately needed ammo. He had made several “requests” and was very proficient in the use of “MF” in its non-abbreviated form as well as other colorful expressions. Finally he just lost it. Of course, after 40 years, I cannot remember the exact conversation but it went something like this. I will use @ for the colorful words. “Charlie Six to Firebase One, over. Fire Base One where’s my @@ ammo you @, @? <pause>. @,@ git a @ slick in the @ air with some @ ammo NOW you @. I'm not sure it could have been "more adequately expressed" by him saying, “Please bring me some ammo, thank you.” I’m not sure it would have been quite as effective in that situation. His use of language was quite an art form too as he was able to use @@ as every part of speech in the English language. I think it would take a PhD in English to diagram his sentences though. I do hope they made it out alive.PS: I’ll bet Dave can read this without pausing. ![]() ![]() |

Sometimes foul language alerts us to the severity of a situation, whether it be the good lieutenant's dearth of ammunition, or an expletive-punctuated rant about how George Bush has undermined US interests at home and abroad. |

PS: I’ll bet Dave can read this without pausing. Since my first assignment in the Fire Direction Center in our battery was to be RTO, I had many conversations similar to that! Usually with LT's out as FO's wanting us to "please hurry up and fire" or something like that, usually over the sounds of a firefight. @Gerald: How's that GT260 doing? Keep us posted. I got 4 units yesterday they all errored out and 4 today one has errored and i guess we can only get 4 per day--running 0.17cpu--maybe something is set wrong.i hope i can figure it out its rather disappointing being i set this computer up to run this-------------AMD Phenom IIx4 940 3GHZ --Gigabyte GA-MA790FX-UD5P--2gigs corsair PC2-6400 You're not running AQUA are you? That's probably the problem. If you're running GPU GRid, I'm using boinc version 6.3.21 and nvidia driver 181.2 and running stable for a few months. Using 6.6.31 driver185.85--GPU Grid Try to uninstall the NVIDA driver, reboot, then reinstall. I found out the hard way that when you install a new NVIDIA driver over an old driver, not all the old driver files get updated. The one sure way was to do it the way I just mentioned. Hope this helps! :) I just took your advice and got 4 new units we will see whay happens--thanks for all help--Dataman maybe it will cool off some or set to run at night How did the GPU crunching go? Is it working? ![]() ![]() |
