World Community Grid's related URLs and IP Addresses

When or if needing to set up security, proxy, dns server etc, these are the relevant IP addresses and URLs to reach WCG through ports 80 and 443
(secure).

http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org
https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org
https://grid.worldcommunitygrid.org

198.20.8.241
198.20.8.246

If the client fails to reach the World Community Grid Servers it will produce the message log line

14-May-2009 19:57:36 [---] Project communication failed: attempting access to reference site

and the client will try to test if the internet in general is accessible.

A. When using the WCG BOINC package, it will attempt to find www.ibm.com as defined in the cc_config.xml file. One of the IP addresses it resolves to is

129.42.58.216

B. When using the standard BOINC packages provided by Berkeley developers, www.google.com address is tested if reachable or not.

If the internet is considered accessible, the client message log entry will show.

14-May-2009 19:59:33 [---] Internet access OK - project servers may be temporarily down.

Usually these connection issues are transient. The client will automatically try in ever increasing intervals to connect to the World Community Grid. See other Help and Start Here FAQ's for further assistance when the problem persists.

For those who want to be extra sure that the client connects to WCG, add the following lines to the hosts file of the operating system.

198.20.8.241 grid.worldcommunitygrid.org
198.20.8.246 www.worldcommunitygrid.org
198.20.8.246 secure.worldcommunitygrid.org

Note this file is usually write protected, requiring the change of the attribute before editing. Also the file should remain without extension i.e. it's name just hosts .

WCG IP Addresses - 30 August 2011

From a post by knreed at https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread_thread,31627
When you talk with the security guys, make sure that they know the following:

1) World Community Grid is an IBM owned and managed project.
2) Our servers are located in IBM data center and are managed to ITCS104 (An IBM defined security policy for service providers)
3) We have the client and server systems periodically reviewed and test for security vulnerability's by IBM experts

As far as the proxy server goes, here are the ip addresses that you would need to allow access to:

198.20.8.246
198.20.8.241
170.224.194.69
170.224.160.205
170.225.97.195

The one exception to the IBM data center, is that we will upload a very large result file for The Clean Energy Project directly to the researchers at Harvard. The IP addresses for that are

140.247.231.147
140.247.231.157

If you choose to not allow those last two, then simply do not opt into The Clean Energy Project.
