I cannot re-install BOINC.

I cannot re-install BOINC.

I get the following error message part way through

"The network feature you are trying to use is unavailable"

"Click OK to try again or enter an alternate path to a folder with the installation package BOINC.msi, in the box below"

When i do this the same error message comes up again.

I have tried totally uninstalling BOINC but this does not work?

Any ideas?

Re: I cannot re-install BOINC.

Hello chambers53,
It sounds as though it cannot find file BOINC.msi. The first thing to try is to use Windows Explorer to discover where BOINC.msi is. Once you have found it, use it to uninstall BOPINC.

Which BOINC package did you install?

Lawrence

Re: I cannot re-install BOINC.

We have seen this before.

There are two options: rip out BOINC with the Windows Installer Cleanup utility (this leaves loose ends) or identify which version of BOINC was originally installed, redownload it and uninstall it that way.

Identify the BOINC version by looking at the version tab for boinc.exe and noting the version number. Also note whether the icon is the World Community Grid logo or the BOINC logo.

Re: I cannot re-install BOINC.

Hi Laurence thanks for posting a solution.

I am now trying to load version 6.2.8.

I'm not sure what version i had before.

A far as I am aware i completely uninstalled the last version using windows xp uninstaller after encountering problems.

I searched for BONIC.msi before I tried to re-install as you suggested and could not find it. Yet i am still getting the same problem

Re: I cannot re-install BOINC.

Hi Guys,

I have tried manually removing all traces of BOINC from by PC via windows explorer and reg edit.

Now when i try to install BOINC v 6.2.8 I error 1714, you failed to uninstall an older version.

I'm not sure what to do next?

Re: I cannot re-install BOINC.

I don't think my colleague or I advised you to do that. For future reference: never try to uninstall a program that way.

Now you have no choice: you have to use the Windows Installer Cleanup utility to clean up the mess. Once you have done that successfully, you will be able to install normally.

smile Re: I cannot re-install BOINC.

Thanks Didactylos.

I have used the Windows installer cleanup utility successfully.

I have now been able to install BOINC 6.2.8 and all appears well.

Thanks for your help.

Regards
Colin
