Windows 7 beta test?

So I'm stuck with Windows 7 on my work machines for the foreseeable future and yes I know the RC isn't out till next week.

So I thought I would get in early and check if there is going to be a beta test or anything as it would be a shame for them to be sitting around not doing much. Though typing this I guess I could run a VM with Ubuntu/XP and Boinc on the inside......

Re: Windows 7 beta test?

If it is of any help, I have two computers running BOINC v 6.2.28 for WCG on Windows 7 beta version 7000 for over two months.
BOINC v 6.2.28 for WCG runs well on Windows 7 beta version 7000, if not better than Vista.

Re: Windows 7 beta test?

I've been running BOINC on my Windows 7 machine for a good while myself and have had no trouble running various projects. I've also gotten a number of beta test units from WCG.

Dunno... need more data. Getting a 35% 'Error' rate on the HPF2 project with the machine (AMD 64 X2 4200+, 2GB) on which I have Win7 beta installed.

Manual data mining from Results Status shows
26 results from that device on that project...
15 Valid (57.6 %)
9 Error (34.6 %)
2 Pending (7.6 %)

The errors are all the same:

<core_client_version>6.2.28</core_client_version>
<![CDATA[
<message>
Incorrect function. (0x1) - exit code 1 (0x1)
</message>
<stderr_txt>
ERROR:: Exit at: .\dock_structure.cc line:401

</stderr_txt>
]]>

0 errors from the other projects it's been running (out of 16 Valids showing in Results Status).

And it is still the beta - probably DL/burn the RC this weekend and install it sometime next week... will try it on a single core then, too.

I do have a few (3) errors from HPF2 on other devices, but those were caused by me.

Re: Windows 7 beta test?

Specifically HPF2 will not run for quite a few on Vista with a high fail rate just seconds after start, so the recommendation is to set up a separate device profile excluding this project and associating the problem OS clients to that profile. It's always with the 6.x.x clients.

Reason of what you see in this specific Result log sequence is unknown. Try client 5.10.45 and make sure to install as service and in a location outside the C:\Program Files\ structure. For instance manually force placement into C:\ProgramData\BOINC

Re: Windows 7 beta test?

Hmmmm... so, you're advising everyone that's running the Windows 7 betas and the release candidate to either not crunch HPF2 or else use BOINC version 5.10.45 as a service?
i.e. rather than help develop the BOINC 6.x betas so it will (or at least 'might') work better with Win7 (and vista).

Windows 7 is coming. Probably by the end of the calendar year.
I've managed to avoid vista totally, but from what I've seen of Win7, so far, in my opinion it's better than vista *and* XP. Unless MS goes way overboard on pricing, I think it will see far-higher acceptance levels than vista has achieved; If they do go overboard on pricing, I (and perhaps many others) will go with Linux when XP support ends.

Darn... no penquin smiley. tongue

Re: Windows 7 beta test?

Read my lips: IF they fail. If the fail rate is low or zero with 6.2-6.6, by all means run HPF2 on Vista or W7.

After much too and fro I've got it working on Vista with a 6.6 client, but absolutely do not know why. They suddenly started running successfully. There's a long separate thread on the HPF2 failing on Vista.

Heh... did I catch you early in the morning, Sekerob? ;-)

It's hard to read words from your lips when you don't say them.
i.e. that's the first mention of IF they fail that I see. I wasn't arguing with you.

I don't find a copy of dock_structure.cc on any device here so I have no idea what's on line 401.

That file is probably one of the source code files.

BTW, has anyone tried running BOINC in the "XP Mode "?
