confused Move Boinc WU-Files to tmpfs?

Hi!

I would like to know if there is an advantage in moving all the files needed for crunching to a tmpfs instead of having them on the disk.
I was thinking of something like this:
- On system startup read the files from the original place on the disk into tmpfs
- Work only on tmpfs until shutdown
- On shutdown write the files back to disk

Do you think that one would notice a difference either in computing speed or in use/lifetime of the disk?

If so, which files would have to be moved and how can I load/save them on startup/shutdown?

tnx, ever dream!

Re: Move Boinc WU-Files to tmpfs?

Hello ever dream,
My personal opinion is that this is a bad idea. Only the check point files are repeatedly written, and they are usually small. I doubt that this could save more than a few seconds out of many hours. One power outage a year could result in net time loss.

This may be worthwhile.

It would be necessary to copy the entire BOINC data directory.

The benefit won't be large, though. This strategy is usually only recommended if you are trying to run BOINC from a flash drive.
